No, unless your insurance decreases by more than the cost, otherwise a waste of time.

More in the hope if a thief sees it's been datatagged they jog on to another bike or at least if it's in bits in someone's shed they better nicked

Datatag can reduce your insurance, and like you say is a visual deterrent. A lot of new bikes seem to have Datatag already fitted. Kits dont cost very much and are quite easy to install. Have never checked to see how much it reduces the premium though.
For a £2k bike wouldn't bother with a tracker, locks etc should be enough to put most thieves off.

I think for a 2k bike it's not worth it unless your young. I never had any alarm on my bikes as it never made any difference to insurance.
But insurance a tracker was a must for my Current bike. No tracker no insurance

Think it depends on the bike for most use datatag or alphadot or smart water marking systems to get you the insurance discount.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but a tracker or equivalent might be mandatory to get an insurance policy on certain bikes like Remal's H2 but on the whole they do not give any discount on premium if you declare them and they are not mandatory.
Hence I've never bothered with Alarms or Trackers since they give zero benefit for reduced insurance premiums. Alarms are just a pain in the backside too.
A factory key based immobiliser seems to give the max security related premium discount from what I can see, guessing you might get a bit more to use one of the above marking systems too.

As above thats what I found. And why my H2 is the only bike to have had a Tracker (or alarm fitted). never a issue with my Blade when it was new and cost me £500 to insure or hen it was 5 years old and went down to under £200. no alarm or tracker
