Interesting, when I was over there in tokyo a few years ago, I noticed how their traffic light and pedestrian crossing systems were odd. Here's a very crude MSPaint since my lunch break is almost over.

The green light to turn and the pedestrian crossing were both in sync, if you were turning, you'd pass the lights and just have to wait on the corner for people to stop crossing, made me wonder what other oddities I didn't see exist in their system.

At first I was wondering how effective that would be, given the angle of dipped beam headlights away from the oncoming traffic etc. The video made it quite clear how handy it can be, however. I commented to my wife that it seemed a decent enough idea (as advanced drivers we already consider the effects of brake lights etc at night on the traffic behind). Her reply put it into perspective; "Hah, over here you'd be lucky if they remembered to put on their lights at all. What chance do you reckon there is of people remembering or caring to do that?!". A particularly Japanese phenomena, perhaps. hehe

akin to the USA "turn on red light" system where you can turn right (which would be a uk left turn) if the lights are red. However, you must still stop at the crossing if there are people on it.

Just this evening. On the A3 coming back into town. Where it goes from 3 Lanes to 2 for the speed camera there's always a bottle neck. AS we're drifting along at ~10mph I notice that this utter bellend in a Nissan Micra is watching a cartoon (think Japanese) on his phone stuck in front of his face.

Dashcam shoes the glow of the film and the image clearly changing so it's not a Sat Nav. And also his reg. Worth posting? Or worth sending to Plod? TBH Sitting here now a hour or so later. I really can't be arsed. laugh

I "may" have dropped my ns window and enquired as to why he was watching the Television whilst driving. biggrin

He looked sheepish as fk!

You suggest being a mutant is a bad thing. We're the most evolved form of mankind. As can be seen here when the cyclist totally shat himself and got what he deserved for cycling too fast past pedestrians.
If you look at Ginger hair under a microscope and check the DNA strands. It is closer to wire than actual homo sapiens DNA. eek

I don't understand when you say the lights being in sync is a problem. If the junction lights and the crossing lights are always both green or both red there shouldn't be a problem. There's a new stretch of road near me where the crossing is just past the junction and people passing through green lights have to queue across the junction at the red crossing lights. Either that or they don't notice the red crossing lights and go through.

With the Japanese headlight etiquette, I don't see that it achieves much but it's bad etiquette to have your indicator pulsating in the eyes of the person behind when you're stopped at lights going nowhere. You may as well switch it off until the lights go green then switch it on.

It's not really a problem, it's just different I guess, took me by surprise at first when the green man came on but there was a car moving and turning towards us, only to stop and wait. It was on most if not all major junctions I saw, not a one off. I don't know if it has benefits.

I'm misunderstanding. So when the traffic lights on one road go to green, the crossing lights just round the corner go to green so people turning the corner are expected to wait for pedestrians crossing.

In my UK example, the crossing works independently of the lights at the junction but is nearly right at the junction and the result is traffic backing up through the junction, which I imagine is what happens in Japan.

<Sarcasm> I cant see how that happened, I mean, the BMW put his indicator on, therefore he should be allowed to just pull out! </sarcasm>

fortunately only one person required hospital treatment (im guessing the yellow Citroen driver/passenger) - Could have been much worse.
