I use to ride ride circa 40 miles on the M25 once a week for work purposes.Wasn't fun in the winter.
After several months I opted to use my car instead as I found myself getting faster and faster whilst filtering.
Filter enough and your speed just naturally creeps (at least mine did).
Eventually it just became a probablility game.

I'm guessing you don't ride? Trust me, everyone who does has had a go to see how fast their bike is and the faster, sportier bikes regularly see higher speeds than cars do. Just because you don't see it or hear about it doesn't mean it's not going on. If your only frame of reference is a car, it's difficult to imagine how little room even a moderately quick bike needs to go well into triple figures. I once clogged through a couple of gears overtaking a taxi on a B road and...well, you know the rest. I was at the NSL before I knew it. Overtake a slow coach at 90mph in a car and they might well s
t themselves. Do it on a bike and they probably won't bat an eyelid. Sometimes in stop-start traffic I notice the car in the next lane moving to block a bike about to filter between me and it... I like then moving away from them so the bike gets through. Really winds the blockers up :-)
As a former London biker, I get irritated by those who filter to the front at lights then pull away too slowly. Sometimes you expect it (moped), other times it's someone who's just a selfish tit. I don't expect a hunched-over, barely keeping the wheel on the road start, but if you filter past a line of traffic then you shouldn't hinder the car at the front who was planning to give it a bit of welly on the green.
Also, some bikers don't plan the point where they stop filtering particularly well - some will pull into your lane so close in front that you wouldn't be able to stop if they came off. I saw one bloke ride into a traffic island, he was blatting down a right-turn filter lane and seemed to think his bike would fit into the foot between my stationary car and the kerb (it didn't).

Not mine; been filtering on the M62 for years, miles and miles and miles. 17-19mph.Eventually it just became a probablility game.
I have a MASSIVE fear about having to claim on insurance, that acts as a very effective brake.

You can be well into 3 figures effortlessly within seconds, if you come up behind a queue of slower moving A road traffic you can flash past them without half of them even knowing what happened, and you can rapidly filter through standing traffic once you reach a town.
I drive a 911 and aren't afraid to absolutely open the taps on a regular basis to make a bit of progress, but it totally and utterly leaves me wanting compared to my bikes. Not just in outright speed, but also just the ability to be past people in seconds. Almost nothing holds you up on a bike for more than a brief period.
Nothing compares.

kers I see doing just that around the M25 is shocking to me. Many with little regard for fellow bikers who don't want to roll the dice for their continued survival to gain a few minutes either. I suppose familiarity breeds contempt, either that or they don't care about being crippled or dead.I usually end up catching up to the less insane ones by dint of better lane choice through observation in any case while keeping things a lot more discrete.
