I've never considered VED cost and can't understand why people buying as enthusiasts do. If you're spending hundreds or thousands running a sports car each year what's a couple of hundred quid?

Even new cars which odd people proudly proclaim they paid cash for and then explain they made their choice based on saving £30 a year.

Just bizarre.
I had that attitude when I picked up mine after a year's wait back in Jan 2016. Still bloody hurt when I got the tax bill for this year biggrin

Mind you for some reason the insurance is still ridiculously cheap.

I barely pay much more for my 410bhp £35k Mustang as I do for my 17 year old 170bhp e36 worth maybe £500.

Do we think manufactures will price cars a bit cheaper now to keep them under 40k for this reason?

Obviously I mean cars floating around the 40k mark.
i mentioned this in a topic on this when the new VED first came out and I think it would be pretty cool. such as making a bare bones E-class or S-class etc.. just so it can fit under £40k.

So a lease car of over £40k will now have a bigger initial payment to pay for or will that just get hidden in the fees ?
Not that I lease cars at all so not that savvy on leasing
the surcharge is on y2 for £40k+ cars, not y1.

I think it will lead to a rise of lots of 'dealer fit' options.... buy the car for £39k with 6k of dealer fit options, which are already 95% installed
Ive bern thinking along these lines. Obviously not everything can be dealer fit, but I can imagine a lot of electronic features being enabled at a cost after purchase and registration so it is classed as an accessory.

There are a few options on my car that could have been dealer fit but were factory fitted.

In the same way that 1.8 litre cars once came under some sort of company car tax bracket, I predict new ways evolving of lessening the blow.

40k is not a lot of money for a car these days. Manufacturers will I am sure find ways to get customers into their cars.

If I buy a 67 plate Range Rover which is dealer pre registered who pays the first year tax? Has the dealer already paid as its attached to the vehicle or does it work pro rata or do I have to pay it all over again if the car is sub 1 year old?
