To buy that car in that spec from the dealer = £27660
That's list price though, isn't it ?
Fair point, I'd imagine very few new cars are actually sold at their list price
Same could be said for the 2nd hand car adverts i mentioned, Doubt people pay the price advertised smile
Not sure you could get £5k off a £15k second hand car, unlike new.
5k off and throw in some car mats wink

Anyways my point still stands, Leasing worked for me smile

exactly why are you on PistonHeads? surely mumsnet is a better fit for your lifestyle only half joking
You don't need to spend thousands on a car to be a petrol head. Would my lifestyle be better if I spent £300 a month so I could afford a lease on a boring audi or bmw? I doubt it. After all I can't be seen driving anything other than a 65 plate car to make me truly a member of pistonheads. Ah well back to mum's net I go..

You're missing the point
Do you really think all new cars are leased to 'increase ego?'

Enjoy mumsnet- assume that was your final post

So many different points on here- clearly my title wasn't meant literally... I knew the title would attract lots of comments...

It doesn't always make sense but keep the miles relatively low and if you're in the market for a brand new daily it certainly makes a lot sense. There's so much stress in this life and paying a premium to not worry about your everyday transport is a price worth paying in my opinion.... I have no mechanical know how which can make owing an older car tricky.

As I said earlier on my Skoda is 10 years old, currently treats me very well but who knows how long for? Maybe another year, or two , or five minutes? Leasing enables you to keep things predictable.... And this is key here, for some people if not I would imagine the majority of the population...

Indeed
A huge part of the appeal. It is also quite a treat to have a brand new car with all the toys. And if Jon can afford it, then why on earth not? Takes away hassle of selling it too

Funny, I can't remember saying that all cars are leased to increase ego. Mind quoting that?

Excess mileage rates are usually very reasonable, 6-10ppm. So it could be argued the more you drive the car the cheaper ppm it becomes.

How do you work that one out then?

Take a typical £6k 2yr lease with 20k mileage allowance. That's 30ppm basic.
The excess might cost 8ppm.
So if you then did 30k instead, that's £800 in excess mileage. Or in total that's £6800 for 30k of motoring. That's 23ppm.
So in my opinion lease cars are best when doing higher mileage as the ppm costs can become very reasonable.

With lease cars and also second-hand cars the biggest cost is often just having the car sat on the driveway depreciating.
The more you drive the car, the cheaper on a ppm basis it becomes. The total cost of cause is always rising.

ps. I make no claims that leasing is cheaper than a second-hand car.

If you're going to get a new mainstream car, leasing does seem to be the way to go these days. However, for me buying new never makes sense.

There is a good chance you may save money by buying second hand. But then again there are cases where the delta is very small indeed when all parameters are taken into account. A quick look at the bathtub curve of reliability helps to understand that.
