RE: Support a Viper 'ring lap record attempt!
Discussion
This mornings update
Day 9: For some of the American Viper fans, it's now the middle of the night. At 2AM EST,(8AM local time) we were on the track with a lap donated to us by the very nice folks at The Nurburgring. What I can tell you is that a lot of people here recognize the monumental grassroot effort being made by The Viper Nation, and they are doing what they can to help. Luca Stolz had to leave as he had a race this weekend, so we were down to one car with Dominik Farnbacher driving. The track is so long, that the marshalls have a pretty good idea of how fast a car is lapping by how long it takes to pass different points (which are actually different cities) (split times). We were told after 2 minutes that we were one of the fastest cars they had ever seen. And then after 7 minutes when the car didn't return, we became concerned. Around 8 minutes, it pulled into the pits. Things happen in racing and in this case, the radio that the Industry Pool requires each car to carry, fell off its mount and lodged itself behind the pedals. Dom alternately had no brake or no clutch. Dom then had to leave to go home to pack (4 hours away) as he has his first NASCAR race this weekend. He said that if we can get back on track for one more lap at the end of the day, he will drive back (4 hours) to pilot that one lap. Since then, it has started raining again, so it looks like we will be forced to return in August if we can get the money.
A lot of you are asking for the video. We know you want it and are getting to downloading it to a computer and trimming the heads and tails so you only have to watch the 7:03 and not a bunch of extraneous footage. It's coming, I promise, but there is a lot going on, all at once. Irrespective of the 7:03 video that we will post, this is not the end. We can get into the 6's and are going to do it. If you want to continue to help this effort, please go to the gofundme page and donate. This is extremely expensive stuff to do. It's not like we can just show up and run a record time. We are competing against efforts that are funded by factories that are willing to spend unlimited money to have their car be the Ring King. And we all know which car is truly the Ring King. Stay tuned.

So they've blown 160k of donated money to do one lap that was about 12 seconds off the pace and now need another 50k minimum to give it another go?
No not exactly,They had paid for track time last Friday but sadly the drivers were complaining something did not feel right with the rear end of the car, it turned out at least one of the rear hubs was slightly out of tolerance, not wanting to take risks with proffesional drivers they striped the rear end down and found the problem, so that was a big chunk of money (booked track time) down the pan. You have to think of the logistics in this record attempt, prepping the cars, Putting in a safety cage in both cars for the drivers, shipping the cars out to Germany, hiring transport and garages to ship and store the cars, spares. and of course the people in the team who are working on the cars. They had another slot booked for Monday (track time) but it got rained off!
When the weather did clear they managed to get a sighting lap and then 1, I will say that again, 1 hot lap on a less than perfect (damp in places) track.
With that hot lap they have already beaten the previous Viper records and Dominik Farnbacher says there is a lot of room to better that speed.
So if the goal to get down under 7 seconds is not achieved this week then the team will return to the states, leaving the cars secure (more storage costs, Airfares) and then return to try again.
Lets not forget Hotel fees, fuel, etc.
If you were to ask a manufacturer what their costs were, I bet they would never tell you!

Had i been the person donating 10k though i'd be rather disappointed at the time after the hype of the original crowdfunding page.

FIAT don't like the cheapo viper out performing Ferrari. Hence it being killed off. There will obviously be some official reason like poor sales which would in no way be affected by FIAT refusing to spend any money on marketing and killing off the race program which was out performing Ferrari.
I suspect they defiantly don't want a car they are killing off turning up in their back yard and doing this.

Couldn't Dodge (a subsidiary of a multi-multi-billion dollar organisation) pony up some money themselves? Seems p*sspoor that this is being entirely crowdfunded by enthusiasts.
what would be the point? Its pretty obvious that a car that is pretty much a race car (the clue being in the name ACR!!) is going to be pretty fast at the 'ring. We know what it weighs, we know how much power it's got, we know what the aero does, exactly no one is going to be surprised if it goes under 7 min. And then there is the fact the car is obsolete and not being replaced. Even if they were faster than the Performante, how long do you think that record would last? I'd give it maybe a year till something goes faster.
At the end of the day, that's why we have racing championships, that is where you prove the capability of your car, not in some random 'my balls are bigger than yours' waving!
Doesn't look like the got that run in this afternoon.
Day 9: Update... There's a lot going on for Viper lovers. Below, you'll find how we are rocking the automotive world with international stories about our mission and how we're going about accomplishing it. Check out the links in the comments below.
Next, look for the in-car video to be up on-line within the next 24 hours. Watch how fast Dominik Farnbacher responds. That's what makes him so good. Finally, after much head scratching and discussion, we feel that there is 5 seconds more in the car. That would bring us down to a 6:58. Will it beat the Porsche 918 time? We will have to return NEXT MONTH to find out. We were lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time and got 3.5 hours in August. The only thing I'm waiting for prior to booking it, is a couple of single end-of-the-day runs, in case it rains for the entire 3.5 hours that we book. The 3.5 hours will cost approximately $45,000. That does not include the cost of traveling, hotels, etc. for the crew. So, it looks like we're crowdfunding again. Please go to https://www.gofundme.com/take-back-the-ring-record This has turned into a herculean effort, but we think it's worth it. Help if you can.

don't take the car all the way back to the US - I'll happily keep in for them for a month or so and save them a packet They had paid for track time last Friday but sadly the drivers were complaining something did not feel right with the rear end of the car, it turned out at least one of the rear hubs was slightly out of tolerance, not wanting to take risks with proffesional drivers they striped the rear end down and found the problem, so that was a big chunk of money (booked track time) down the pan.
