I'm sure there's not one right answer and I'm not looking for the best objectively, merely the coolest (even if it's not a great car)! This segment of the market is traditionally a rather conservative one and not a type of car that you would necessarily associate with cool but I think a few manufacturers still didn't get the memo! So what are your nominations? Just a few ideas from me.

Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio
Aston Martin Rapide
previous-gen Maserati Quattroporte (the current Quattroporte has lost a little something in my eyes and I can think of lots of reasons not to buy one but the "old" one is still effortlessly cool IMHO)

Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth - the car to have in the early 90s and then slipped into disrepute but I think has become cool and desirable again?

Lotus Carlton
Audi S8 D2 (Ronin)
BMW M6 Gran Coupe (BMW don't want us to think of it as a 4 door saloon but it is really isn't it and whereas the M5 IMHO looks massive and bulbous, this one looks lithe and great)

Any more thoughts on what constitutes the "coolest" 4 door saloon ever?

The Lotus Carlton is the only car to have its suitability to exist questionedat Governmental level.

Its the only car to have had rumours about outrunning a Police helicopter.

It's not just a car. Its an actual Legend.

What could be cooler than that?
Definitely this, all the others are awesome cars, but nothing is cooler than the Carlton.

Not a bad shout. Seems like the sweet spot in the M5 lineage. smile

Monteverdi 375 High Speed

Aston Martin Lagonda

Lincoln Continental

Yes, they were all (probably) a bit crap to drive, but they're still cool for different reasons (IMHO).

Hmmmm. 4 doors and a boot...where do you draw the line or do we just take the marketing BS at face value? Seems like a more expensive (albeit better looking) saloon version of a coupe version of a saloon to me...smile Where would the Rapide/Panamera/Quattroporte fit into the saloon-coupe spectrum?

Another vote for the previous generation Quattroporte. Just gorgeous.

But I do have a soft spot for the Mk2 Granada 2.8i Ghia paperbag

Standard, black, slightky dusty Sierra Saphhire Cosworth.

(Maybe I watched too many Spender episodes when I was young!)

needs to be something with no boy racer connotations, so despite being pretty damn cool Sierra 'Cossie' no the coolest. The Monteverdi is a good shout, effortless cool :-) What about a Jag Mk10 for a bit of Brit Cool?

The C63 AMG will surely go down as a bit of a legend? That 6.2 V8 in a small saloon!!

As for the coolest, I have always found the Arnage immensely cool:-

I'd say this is way cooler than any modern tin box, and there must be loads of cool stuff from the 30s. Nowhere near as quick but that wasn't the question!

The Carlton has to be up there. I was lucky enough to see the car involved in that record at Bicester last year. It was quite something. These days it's the norm for mega output engjnes and 180 mph but in the 90's those numbers were the preserve of the exotics.

The phantom has to be up there for sheer size and engineering skills, plus it manages to be stupidly opulent without looking flash like a Bentley.

Ide say the best looking saloon currently is the Volvo S60
