E34 has to be my favorite shape and has the kudos of being 'hand-built'.

E39 maybe the best all-rounder however I think the E60 V10 has a very special place in the M5 line up - sounds immense and has one of the all-time great engines. Don't think there are many offerings that can top that glorious V10.

No, I meant that with the current generation of RS6, Audi have played a blinder. Older RS cars (apart from maybe the V8 RS4) were no match for their M-car competitors. The current RS6 absolutely is (both subjectively - I have tested both at some length when I was thinking of getting rid of my Aston and replacing with either the M5, RS6 or E63).

When you are buying a previous M, you know that you and most reviewers agreed it was THE supersaloon of the era. With the F10, most think that Audi's superestate match or beat it.

Audi, of course, have more rather experience of turbocharging performance engines than BMW...that may or may not mean anything, but it is a thought.

Do you mean the rs6 is better ?

Never even considered one - its more than just power and acceleration than makes an M special .

I had an rs2 and it was a pretty blunt tool compared to an e34 m5 . I imagine an rs6 to be similar .

On your RS2 point, if desirability is what you are talking about, look at RS2 prices next to E34s. Audi definitely have some special moments.

Mind you, for my plan B, now that I am keeping my sports car, it is a BMW (E60 M5) or a Mercedes (C63 AMG) I am considering for the family wagon, rather than Audi's RS4. Despite the RS4 being a very desirable machine, it doesn't seem to have the future classic status of the others...

You're right the SMG is quite hard work in London traffic, and in the end that's why I sold mine. It's not physically hard work of course, it's just the fact that you have to use the paddles, think about what gear you're in, move it to neutral at a set of long lights, find the correct throttle position when setting off etc. But if you can get it out of town it's simply epic and the SMG makes sense. The 6.2L in the AMG is great but the V10 is extra special. Won't be anything like that in a family car ever again. So it all depends on your usage!

90% London with the occasional journey to my Mum's in Surrey. Anything longer will involve using the Vantage. So it will probably do about 1-2000 miles a year, all short runs.

Actually, short of thinking these cars may go up in value, there is absolutely no reason for me to buy one. £1000 beater estate car, then. Or something like £5000 Subaru something WRX.

Shame. But I think I will destroy an M car (physically and value-wise) doing short runs with it. And your comment on needing to be careful with the box makes me think that Lady F (American, hates manual cars) will lunch it in traffic.

But I really want an E60/61 M5 Touring. So rare, so good looking (inside and out) and so likely to become a classic if kept in one piece...

I really wouldn't advise getting an E60 M5 for doing that. You'll get 11mpg, never have a chance to get to the interesting part of the rev range and it will do funny things if your battery level drops due to doing lots of short journeys. Driving it in D mode in stop start traffic will kill the clutch pretty quickly.

For me, the E61 estate is the next breadvan in terms of values.... i will own one for gits and shiggles at some point and hope that i time it right. V10 sounds immense

I have only driven the E39, which was great, but surely the first four generations are inherently very special, and the fifth was born into a thankfully ending age when everyone was being convinced that a high boost Diesel engine was in any way a good thing. It's a miracle the F10 M5 won over the M550i, and that makes it as special as the other four.

Exactly the car I wanted years ago. The last of the bespoke handmade e34s. Fabulous.

Could have bought a minter for 8000 in 2003 when I bought the e39....couldn't get close for that money today

Sad story:. My first car was a '90 535iA. It was added white over tired beige and it had a heap of issues with it, from a finicky light module, rusty doors and rockers, door panels coming apart, leaking windshield, etc. But the engine was great.

Anyway, I was ready for my next car and managed to scrape-up/borrow like $4500 USD and drove 3hrs north with a friend to check out a black on black E34 M5 that I had discussed with the seller about. It was pretty nice. Interior was supple. It was stated to be 135k miles, but I got in and saw 188k. The seller said the gauges were replaced at some point and the PO didn't swap the mileage module over....Sure. it also had gas in it that was months old. And it was 15 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Started it up, few minutes passed then a plume of white smoke poured from the top center of the radiator. Yay. Clearly the guy didn't fire up the car prior to my arrival to make sure all was good. At that point, I knew I couldn't drive it home if I was going to buy it. The smoke went away, but I was not thrilled. Hopped in and didn't even care to drive it so I told my friend to drive it because at the time he was better versed in these cars so I figure he could feel it out because I was in need of convincing. Drove fine. Had a knock in the rear like a shock tower mount. No biggie.

All in all, the deal was that I trade my beat up 5er with my 4500 on top for his M5.

All things considered, I still wish I had not turned it down. Kicking myself. (M5 as a second car would have been boss.... And 5 years later, I still have yet to buy a manual car. Bane of my existence)

If only I could rewind the years. Oh well. The E39 M5 is a prospect for the future though. Glorious tones from those pipes.

I remember as a kid seeing a forest green E34 M5 in Manchester city centre always parked up near Kendals with the registration CH4ZZY or similar. It was such an understated car that my mates couldn't understand why I wanted one so much.
A stunning car - anyone on here owned it ? (would be late 80's early 90's)

Having both the E39 and E60 in the family I have to say both are brilliant at what they do. They sound amazing...that V10 screams like an F1 car. The V8 is just filth...NASCAR. I prefer my E39.
