It's quick... but in an effortless way.

It so lacks the experience when you're used to more exciting cars...

I'm only insanely jealous! wink

I will have a Porsche before my days are up, probably a boxster/cayman budget wise but I've promised myself one day smile

I got took out in a 997 GT3 RS once, epic! if those 6 numbers ever drop I will be on my way to OPC Nottingham in a flash.

Enjoy the rides buddy beer

Porsche Definition # good at doing everything; expensive; perceived quality

My opinion, is the badge now adorns to many mass produced VW knock off cars, and the sports cars they do still make (that you can buy) attempt to be all things to all (wealthy) people.

If I neeeded 1 car to cover all bases the 911 gts might be it, but if I had £100k+ to spend then I would certainly have a garage with different cars to cover those bases.

- Mclaren 540 - is far more exclusive and better sports car at this price range.
- Aston V8 - probably not as good in a single area as this Porsche, but the Aston is like a Rolex compared to the reliable Seiko of a Porsche.
- Lotus Evora - is the drivers choice, with exclusivity and £30k change.

Journalists need to be brave and say what is the real deal for the 911 -- it is crushingly dull to drive for a ~£100k car.
Had 2 new 997's back in the day (997.1 C2S & 997 GTS) but when the 991 came out I left the '911' behind - So dull! I remember telling the dealer it's like driving an Audi.

Now Audi actually do the best most exciting 'daily' sports car IMO.

Fair enough. I thought it might be one of those unobtainables I keep seeing so much.

No need to defend yourself Matt. The review was refreshingly honest actually.

I can only conclude that anyone criticising your stance skipped straight to the last line.
No, I read the whole review. Contrasting as it was, it read to me that Matt wasn't overly keen on it as he stated to start off with but daren't actually conclude it was a dull, effortless car.

"with what feels like a fairly linear delivery now, a gear doesn't have to be driven right out" "it feels like a relentless stream of acceleration rather than one with peaks to chase and troughs to avoid"

"the desire of this engine to rev out will keep you venturing back"

Could be talking about 2 different engines there.

Maybe it's the whole fear of what happened with Chris Harris and Ferrari.

really tho? The 981 Box/Cay was universally praised and the new 718 line is adored by the motoring world as being a brilliant sports car (we will ignore the noise thing for now - that's still as a result of legislation, not some strange belief by Porsche that a 4 pot turbo is better).

Your first point is interesting tho - Porsche do all they can to retain value in their cars. You can go and buy a 718 today if you want, but you won't be driving it until September (give or take).

I lost count of the reviews I read on the Cayman GTS saying it was almost the pick of the Porsche range (with the exception of the RS models) and that was the 'low cost' option from the Porsche line.

I have said a number of times that the 991 I test drove left me under-whelmed. But maybe that's what they are now. They are something that should be considered almost an addition to the Audi range of cars. 'Safe' all rounders. And maybe that is a shame. I made my choice.

Final point - love the looks, but I have those '4 spot' headlight things that are on the current Porsche line. They really do something to bugger up the visuals for me. frown

was this GTS a bit boring? probably, but a 2wd manual with bucket seats? now that would feel special.

That's the 2 GTS, the 4 GTS is 100k at that price my money would go elsewhere but I can understand why this car appeals.

I'm not going to call the car dull or effortless, because it isn't. Fact is people like us would probably want a bit more going on in their expensive sports car, hence my comments. Those people who actually buy 911s probably don't.

As for the engine, my point was that it can feel a little underwhelming to start with as there isn't that step-up in performance you had with the old 3.8 at about 4,000rpm. But that becomes less of an issue the more you drive it and it's actually incredibly responsive and willing for a twin-turbo engine.

I love reading these porsche debates. Yet seldom join in. It amazes me how many contributors to these forums express a solid opinion (usually negative) about porsches - yet don't own one and often haven't even driven one.
I own a 996gt3rs 997.1gt3rs 997.2gt3rs 3.8 boxster spyder 993gt2 993rs cs Strad F40 996 rsr and the list goes on but you get the point ..... my car of choice for a day out to wales or yorkshire or any spirited drive is my 991.1 gts, it's that good. Second choice is my Spyder. I have a 991.2 gts on order.

Is this not because, its more attainable and not a limited valuable asset?

Find it hard to believe if all were of same value and attainability you'd choose it? of course this is just my perception

hey Likesachange.....of course there will be some subconscious aspect of my mind that protects some of my cars, but I try to not be like that. They all did track days in 2016. I took the f40 to scotland for a week where it lived outside and got driven every day. However, I stand by what I said, i really do think my 991.1gts is the best sportscar I own. Mine has the the 20mm dropped suspension and is a 2wd coupe without a sunroof. It had pdk. I have done 14,000 miles in it. Prior to this car I did 10,000 miles in a 991.1 gts that did not have the dropped suspension, had a glass sunroof and was a manual 2wd; that car was not as good, in fact I hated it. I sold it to get my current gts with it's different spec. So there you are,,, I've put it out there: I think my pdk gts is a better sports car than my 997.2gt3rs.

I agree, selection of cars like that to my eyes represents an investment fund more than a garage to be driven and used. The last thing anyone wants to do with an investment fund is depreciate it by using it. I would love for you to tell me that all cars get driven hard and often!
