This would be why the latest 911 raises hardly a flicker of interest from me. It sounds like they've built an Audi but with a more comfortable ride and without the understeer...
I am sure it goes around corners very very well and precise...but it does not have NA engine, it does not have manual, it does not have hydraulic steering, it does not have that old-school roughness that I still feel even in my manual 997 Turbo for example (that thing is like an alligator that launches at you when you start prodding it, I am a bit scared of it, it already tried to kill me twice)."the GTS initially feels a little distant, aloof almost"

Current 911s are so polished and precise. This is both good and bad. But look at BMW, M3/4, M5 - hippos with lack of feel and lack of traction. AMG is basically the same, only even bigger traction problems. Audi is front-heavy. 911s are one of the best road sportscars around. But older 911s with less power, less mass, fewer nannies and "aidz" and more feel get under the skin much more.

That's the 2 GTS, the 4 GTS is 100k at that price my money would go elsewhere but I can understand why this car appeals. david hockney said:
I had a 991.1 GTS and found it boring to drive.
I sold it and got a BMW 1M coupe.
Therefore I went from a station wagon to a go-cart-
The BMW far more exciting to drive and 60 grand cheaper.
991.1 GTS is lighter than 1M. The 911 has shorter wheelbase than 1M. 1M as go cart - I think not.I sold it and got a BMW 1M coupe.

So what you actually like about 1M is the loose rear end and extra space (primarily the boot).

I agree. I think many people seem to forget just how fast a 450bhp car will be down the road. Maybe they've never experienced it so just comment on stats they read somewhere. I have the opinion that 300 - 350bhp is more than enough for some usable fun on the road. Fast enough to feel exciting and usable to the very last drop of power. Any more and you are in license losing speeds before the car comes alive.
Couldn't agree more. The POWERRRRR wars have become ridiculous. I'd love them to make a non-turbo version of the 3.0 engine, say about 320bhp, in a basic spec i.e. retaining reasonably light weight. It'd be the pick of the range in real life.Matt Bird said:
I'm not going to call the car dull or effortless, because it isn't. Fact is people like us would probably want a bit more going on in their expensive sports car, hence my comments. Those people who actually buy 911s probably don't.
As for the engine, my point was that it can feel a little underwhelming to start with as there isn't that step-up in performance you had with the old 3.8 at about 4,000rpm. But that becomes less of an issue the more you drive it and it's actually incredibly responsive and willing for a twin-turbo engine.
Those of us who want a bit more going on buy old 911s instead of new ones. Wish they would make a new base model with NA version of the 3.0 engine. That'd be properly responsive and a pleasant change, useable in the real world. "..for a twin-turbo engine" says it all about the 991.2 range. As for the engine, my point was that it can feel a little underwhelming to start with as there isn't that step-up in performance you had with the old 3.8 at about 4,000rpm.
