These cars are currently way undervalued, saw a very tidy GT4 st185 sell recently for £2300.
I much prefer the shape of the original Gt-4, a very rare car now due to them selling very few in the UK and the rust getting into them.
My old ST165. I put on the white decals. Loved it. Also have had an ST185 and an ST205. All great cars and bargains now. I much prefer the shape of the original Gt-4, a very rare car now due to them selling very few in the UK and the rust getting into them.

Lol good to see all the usual faces get around, especially when 90's Toyota's are mentioned.
Ignore the horror stories twoblacklines, I've had MR2's for 4 years and also not died... Yet! ;-) If the car is well setup and the driver knows how to drive a mid-engined car you'll be fine, its all the tools who think they're F1 drivers and push them too far and can't handle the car. I'll guarantee over 99% of the time it won't be the car that causes the accident ;-D
Both great cars of their time and massively under-rated.
Got to fight our corner! 10 posts in 8 months, you're slacking Woody! Ignore the horror stories twoblacklines, I've had MR2's for 4 years and also not died... Have to admit, at times when I've thought about getting a GT4, i've struggled to decide between the 185 and 205. Both great looking cars in their own way.
There's a black ST185 RC parked on the road on Rush Green Road, I drive past it often. They used to have a white ST205 on the drive too, but recently there's been a Mk1 TT there instead. I hope that doesn't mean they've sold the 205 for a bloody TT!If I went for a GT4 it would be a 185. But long term I think I'd look into a Gen3 or a Gen4 swap.
And just because, Safari spec 185:

The ST185 looks good, the ST205 looks a fuggly mess with its bug eye front and standard castor wheels. I'll concede the 205 looks a lot better and balanced out with some larger wheels and the raised rear spoiler.SonicShadow said:

+1 you'd have to go for the later 3sgte eventually wouldn't you? The st185 was a very heavy thing.If I went for a GT4 it would be a 185. But long term I think I'd look into a Gen3 or a Gen4 swap.

I gawp at that 185 on rush green road every time i drive past it, it looks just right. Rarely seems to move though. Didn't realise the st205 had gone though! They both looked the dogs danglies.
I have a soft spot for the st185.
Back in 2005 I opted for a rev3 turbo over a st205, which were around £6k - £7k for a good one.
I look from time to time but good ones seem to be holding their value ( MR2 long since gone due to kids).
If I were to spend £3k - £4k on a smallish fast turbo'd car though, I would have to seriously wonder why I wouldn't buy a megane 225, or a mk5 gti.
If I was spending £1k - £2k then it would be ropey St185 vs leon 1.8t, which is over a decade newer.
If I ever have enough spare cash to have a hobby car, then I could be drawn towards a GT4.

£3k-£4k for Golf is getting the absolute bottom of the pile GTi that probably has many problems and big mileage though. Ultimately though it comes down to the buyer. Someone who has £5k in their pocket that considers a Mk5 Golf is not a retro car buyer, they are happy to get a car that blends into the background, that you will see dozens of other ones every time you take it out on the road. A buyer with £5k who turns their back on that for a GT4 is into their older cars, probably more hands on, likely to be more of an enthusiast etc.Back in 2005 I opted for a rev3 turbo over a st205, which were around £6k - £7k for a good one.

As capable as a Megane or Golf are, there and tens of thousands of them on the road, I want something more rare, which is why my £5k wouldn't go near VW or Renault.

Excuse my total ignorance (of these cars) but does the 185 & 205 refer to BHP or just a model number?
Model number. The ST185 had 215bhp and the ST205 had 250bhp IIRC. Both were quite lardy and laggy but when up to speed they were rapid and handled ok, but maybe suffered from too much grip vs balance.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
