actually i think what i read was of a 1.8T volvo block. something to do with them being forged already and able to handle massive power with just a new turbo bolted on. had a quick look through readers cars but reckon it was 4-5 years ago i read it lol

I'm boosting over 2.3 Bar on stock T4 internals, the engine produces 530HP and 610Nm at the moment without any problem. Your engine failed because of a bad tune or simply you had a bad luck. My wote goes to the first statement .
And: T4 from CroatiaI ran one of these for a year, Paid £562 for it on eBay, black T plate. Great cars if not as fast as the figures show. Mine averaged 29mpg and was very useful!
Points to watch:
Oil leak on turbo - £2 washer but a botch to change
10 secs cranking to start (cold only): Fuel pressure regulator - 30 mins to change
Good motors, recommended for shedding! Especially as I sold mine for £580 when I'd finished with it

HAd a Ph1, bought for peanuts as it needed a new steering rack, which was duly done. Other than the front wings just above the arches wanting to turn into paper doilies, it was ....ok. Perhaps the fact that I'd had a few T5s that I'd bought and sold jaundiced my view, but to me it never really felt like a Volvo should.
Having said that, I wouldn't mind one at the right price, but only if I could factor in a decent set of alloys; I mean, who signed off that design? I've seen better looking dustbin lids.

Great shed!
Having clicked on the link above for the manic Swede evidence, it lead me to this example (who knew speedo needles kept going?);
Is that an airbag light I can see lit in a massively tuned Volvo with boatlike handling, followed by a brake idiot light when he hits the anchors, too? That's... brave.Having clicked on the link above for the manic Swede evidence, it lead me to this example (who knew speedo needles kept going?);
Cool shed. Just bought a mechanically perfect S40 of the same vintage for my brother in law to tool around in for about £300, it has a lovely reassuring feel of quality and solidity all round.
A well sorted one of these is a decent and fairly quick steer - The earlier 1.9 models were reputed to produce a wee bit more than the quoted 200 odd bhp - certainly I've seen a few decent ones on a standard set up running around the 215 odd bhp mark - I think Volvo were conservative in their figs so as not to step on the toes of the T5 V/S70 - Essentially the same engine minus a cylinder.
Chassis not up to the job of the power output on twisty roads but in day to day driving its never really an issue.
If you are looking to buy, don't confuse the 2.0t model with the T4 they are different, that said the 2.0t is a great all-rounder.
They're not quite as robust as their bigger brothers they do rust more than some volvos and the general build is not as good as a Swedish made ones but they are by no means crap. Very reliable if looked after. If I needed a cheap, swift family car this is what I would buy - Good crash safety too for the age of car too. Look great in Panama Yellow if you can find one.

I bought one of these as a project/fun car (yes volvo=fun) last year in an 52 s40 guise, not had chance to use it much but its on 147k, feels fine to drive, its not great handling or anything, but bloody hell it it fun, and the looks on some people faces when the stupid old man car shoots off is brilliant, and for £650 quid even though Im going to spend plenty of bits and pieces will make my money back on the car easily if I sell it.
When I used to work in Germany we travelled down from Calais to Munich and back in one of these twice a week. 3 big guys and little me, 140-150mph on the speedo down the autobahn flat out for a good twenty minutes and it never so much as gave a rattle or any problems, although I think it breathed a sigh of relief upon reaching the destination.
Brilliant cars, well made and tough.

Saw one passing through town yesterday and there's another local one that is very quick so probably a bit tweaked
Saw an estate version for sale at a local garage a fair few months back - stayed unsold for quite a while but gone now
They got tested against stuff like the 156v6, 328i and Merc C280 in the mags

S40 was always my favoured BTCC car and therefore any fast one was the one I wanted my dad to have.
He picked an admittedly lovely B5 A4 instead but still, Rickard Rydell driving the wheels off it inspired many a dream of owning an S40 and driving it quickly. A V40 T4 for pennies would be fine by me.

My parents used to have the 2.0T, the 160hp version saloon.
I remember test driving the T4, man, in those days 200hp seemed to be so much power!
The Volvo was a nice car, but we switched from the manual Alfa Romeo 164 T-Spark and in the beginning it was very hard to adjust to the incredibly soft clutch pedal on the Volvo, I always always slammed my foot through the floor pressing it, because the clutch pedal on the Alfa was very hard. Years later I had Sachs sports clutch installed on my heavily tuned Golf GTI Ed30 and manipulating that clutch brought back fond memories of the Alfa.

I can vouch for their safety. We had one as an unmarked patrol car. I was driving along a mountain road one day, on a recce for a royal visit, when, on rounhding a bend, I was confronted by a number of deep holes dug by the council with the warning signs removed. I dipped a wheel into a hole with the resuli that the car rolled three times. Out of the 4 occupants, I was the only one injured and that was caused by the camera detaching from the windscreen and hitting me across the head.
My mates had a few s40's and a v40, I can remember asking him why he'd bought an old man's car when he turned up with the first one, then I drove it and was quietly impressed, they drive very nicely. He had a battered se model for a while which we spent many hours removing the engine from before transferring it in to a very clean sport model with a knackered engine only for the car to get written off by a lorry three weeks after.
He replaced it with another sport that interestingly had nearly the same reg number as the written off car, only one letter was different.
