Seen a few cars where the rear number plate lights have been replaced with LEDs. What is the point? Invariably they are so bright they outshine the rear lights of the car. Surely the point of number plate lights is to subtly illuminate the plate not to create some stupid searchlight effect!!!

Saw a total cock with a white Mercedes C Class with blacked out sidelights and these LED number plate lights - they were brighter than reversing lights.

Why do people bother?

They look st but it's less likely to fail an MOT is the only reason I can think of.

Amazing the amount of cars I've taken for a test that have suddenly failed on a bulb when I haven't been there to monitor the test wink

Let me tell you why many people (including myself) change their number plate lights to LED.

1. Looks more modern comapred to the horrible yellow lights fitted as standard on most cars.
2. Matches the modern look of the LED lights many new cars come with as standard.

I've also changed my interior lights from horrible yellow to cool white. People can see much better when they use the lights in the car!

ETA: It totally depends on the number of LEDs on the board. I agree that some people take it OTT and the really bright ones looks rubbish (lots of glare). I went down the subtle approach and have max 8-12 LEDs on the board (360 effect).

On my car one of the actual light units fell out, it was cheaper to buy a set of plug and play LED units than a single OEM unit

I've put some in my previous cars, they look fresher and more modern in my opinion. That said, they weren't too bright, I have seen some that look stupidly bright.

Also if you have a UK yellow rear plate the overly white light looks wrong. LEDs may be great for longevity and work well with German white plates but they need a yellow filter to look right over here.

I've found them really helpful for spotting drivers who will aggressively pull out without warning as you approach to pass

Fitted them to my MX-5 as it was cheaper to buy a pair of them from Amazon than it was to buy one bulb. As an added bonus they are used to illuminate the boot when it's open and they give a better light "colour" .

Luckily mine are pointed in a way that doesn't dazzle to the rear.

Like said they look better than the awful filament bulbs, less likely to go, match led rear lights, just improve look of the car in some peoples eyes, nothing wrong with modifying.
That being said, glaringly bright or blue leds look gash

The light output from the rear of my old-ish Jaguar isn't great, so for the sake of simply being more brightly lit, I swapped the bulbs. It does add a slightly different look to the car at night and it's definitely more visible than with the previous bulbs.

Where on earth do you buy bulbs from? Standard 501 capless bulbs are about 10p each

They look fking st, and give a horrible garish bright white light. So not sure why people fit them tbh.

I hate LED lights in the interior too - such a horrible, cold and unflattering light. But the plebs lap it all up for the sake of newness!

It's chav modification number 1 wink

They look absolutely ridiculous, some are probably brighter than rear fogs. Usually found on roughly 5 year old VAG chariots.

Saying that, I'd have them if I was 17 again when I didn't know better, it's the modern day equivalent to 'lexus style rear's. hurl

If you buy properly designed LED replacements then they will look just like OEM lights from Audi, BMW, Mercedes etc.

These Osram LED's are not cheap but come with have a five year warranty, mine have been going strong for three years.

I think people are confusing number plate lights that are obviously too bright with ones that aren't.

I can see how life can getting confusing and frustrating for many who post on here.

How can they look bright when they point down and not in your eyes as a driver behind?

Because light reflects off of objects, such as off the bottom of the boot lid or bumper.

I wasn't exaggerating either, you can't help but notice them, even if the car is a quarter mile in the distance, some of them are that bright, you can't help but laugh. The brightness doesn't bother me, I am all for having headlights as bright as possible but the number plate LED ones look daft IMO.
