No, they're really not. RS3 / A45 / M2 are the headliners.
Yet the current M140i can match all of these from a rolling start (which is all that people seem to care about in this segment).. makes them seem grossly overpriced. BMW would be wise to stop giving such generous discounts imo.

I see the M2 as another level in terms of a more complex track set-up - if you look at any track times the M2 is miles quicker than both the RS3 or A45, this is where the M140i becomes comparable to the them. Either that or both Audi and Mercedes are getting spanked!

I usually don't have much of a preference between saloons and hatches.

So why am I not at all interested in the RS3 hatch, but have the serious horn for the RS3 saloon?

Soon to be stolen from a house near you soon... Seriously when are car manurfactuers going to stop chasing power figures and focus on cars which are fun to drive and live with. Still at least in this case you have a 5 cylinder warble to keep you entertained.

I quite agree - there is the product positioning / marketing and then the reality after discounts. A 3-dr M140i with M4 LCAs and a Drexler is still only under £27k new with a couple of options. For me it'd be a far more exciting proposition than a RS3 from the segment/class above but we all have different preferences/budgets.

But it's going to...

Understeer
Feel numb
Be badly damped
Be over servo'd
Be pretty lifeless

Why will this one be different?

True - you can get an M140i from something like £26,000, maybe less. Relatively speaking, its a performance bargain

The new RS3 saloon is a real looker and I'm looking forward to seeing one. I'm glad that audi have stuck to the 2.5 5 pot, so much more interesting than all the blown 4's.

Really wish BMW would make a BMW 1M out of the hatchback though, that would be epic with beefed up arches etc! Please BMW!!!!

I don't think more power was where they should have been focussing effort.

I've not driven one but have they not read the many damning views about how dull and not pleasant it is to drive? This thing could be amazing.

Really can't stand Audi for this image. Every car I loook at bar the R8 and you just know it's going to have mega power and that's it. People who buy RS models seem to have limited imagination too - theres loads in my work car park and all seems to be based on bhp willy waving rather than any interest in cars.

Or they want a car which is fast, sounds pretty epic, looks good (subjective) and it's dynamic flaws (other than numb steering) aren't really noticed in day to day driving.

The latter shows why the former doesn't matter... it shows they are producing what people want. I've been there and done it with Audi. They do what they do and their customers love it. All the tech, it's bloody fast is what they like. 4WD is the clincher.. on the TT forum they can't understand why anyone would want RWD and presume those that do oversteer everywhere to get their jollies.
Not terrible cars, just not for me. I've moved on.

I'd like to see the 'rolling start' evidence to back up what is quite a claim there, and if you exclude the M2 I'm sure the others are no quicker on a rainy night or a greasy roundabout either...... (Not)

Still no manual??
This is the very reason why I won't be buying an RS3 Saloon.

I currently have an S3 saloon as I had the choice of a manual gearbox (and the reason why I didn't buy an RS3 Sportback) and although it's not the best manual gearbox in the world, at least it is manual gearbox.

Well the hatch is still alive then. Neighbour has one (previous one obviously). I think I'm getting the most out of it as I get to hear that engine from the outside and didn't pay a dime biggrin

Seriously, it should turn a bit better with that lighter engine in the nose, if they still do the wider front tyres and perhaps a thicker rear arb should cure the worst understeer. Saloon probably bit better there again and better looking and bigger boot, that's my preference in the range.

With dual injectors and valve lift, they will probably easily tune to 500bhp with minor or no additional hardware. That's a bit silly but also cool.

Unfortunately, people like me that want a modern balanced roomy lightish manual affordable powerful 4wd with true lsd front-mid-rear will have to wait forever... But managing fine with just fwd.
