My dream car. One day, when I have a garage... Argh.

The pic with the Supra just became my desktop.
Pics are cracking, shame they are designed for Windows 95 era resolutions. It's 2017 Pistonheads, how hard can it be to get pics bigger than a postage stamp?

Lovely.

The only one I have seen in the wild; a non R, was black also.

I like reading the enthusiasm of an owner with a "keeper".

I think I will have "WANT" for one of these always.

Back in the early 2000's I was so close, I ended up with a 300zx twin turbo targa. More of a GT really, loved the big daft thing and largely indestructible compared to the RX-7. I made the right choice for me at the time, but still have pangs of regret.

I had one for 2 years. Picked it up in 2007 for 3k. Was a rare type UK. The first engine went pop at 88k, thankfully the previous owner rebuilt it then sold it to be.
Ran really well but never lived up to its looks. I often found myself grabbing the keys to my 172 cup if I wanted a fun drive.
It really turned heads tho. I used to have people knocking on the window in traffic and giving the thumbs up.
God it drank fuel.

That's a bit of a surprise. I found that the Rx felt genuinely special whereas the Clio was just a breather on, Clio? Surely nowhere near dynamically?

Here is my RX7 Bathurst from quite a few years ago, it had well over 370 BHP and was such a nice car.

Thanks for the kind words everyone - glad you enjoyed the read also.

As much as I love how Clio Sports drive, for me they're in a completely different class of car, though arguably more accessible on your average British road for your average driver. I have a Suzuki Ignis Sport as a daily (after passing up a 172 Sport) and it's great to just turn the key and kick its head in on any road at wide open throttle. On a pot-holed B-road, on a normal greasy/cold day I could probably get to my destination quicker in it and use half of the fuel in the process - a large majority of the reason I drive it every day. But on a smoother A-road, motorway or track I would take the keys to the Mazda every time. As with any car that is designed properly it comes alive at the sort of speeds where most hot-hatches run out of puff.

When these cars were £4K they were too cheap for their own good. People could afford to buy them...just...but could not afford to fix them if they went wrong. A lot of the early ones were broken up as a result.
9mpg is like trackday consumption. A well set up car should do 18-20mpg. They are not really daily drivers. Rebuild costs are no worse, or better, than many high performance cars with similar performance, but they don't give many warning signals that they are on the way out.

I bought my first FD in 2006 when it worked out cheaper to buy and insure that a Civic Type R... After a few months I was running a little over 400fwhp through a little T04 and used it as my daily. In 20,000miles it only let me down once and that was a clutch slave cylinder! I had to sell that in 2008 to move to the US (still haven't recovered from letting it go!). I bought my second (also red) when I came back in 2010 with only 26,000miles on it for £3,400 and drove it 200miles home without issue, I knew then I'd made the right choice! It's currently on a SORN (like too many are!) while I shove a single on it along with a LOT of other mods. Given how much they have increased in value I think I'll be fully stripping and painting it now and doing EVERYTHING properly smile

Good times

Brap brap!

Dearly love the FD, and want to sample a rotary engine at some point, I've just never been brave enough to spend £10k + on a car that's quite likely to go pop within 5000 miles.

Maybe after I've finished with my GTR

Lovely car. If I didn't have the Evo 9 I would have one of these or a Supra TT. Just love boosted jap cars.

Back in the day I wanted one so badly, it was a toss up between that & a Supra TT.

The horror stories put me off, I ended up with an R33 GTR that was tuned up to bonkers levels.

Would have been cheaper to own the RX biggrin

In fairness, after the initial breakdown (which turned out to be the fault of some broken solder on the ECU) it didn't break down again for the best part of 2 years, though it did die at that point...though again that was due to a fault of the guy who DIY-rebuilt the engine before I bought it who had managed to twist the main water seal!

The engine has just been built (around 1year ago) - the chap who built it recommended I drive it around off-boost until she was ready for her first service, which I'm hoping to book in this week. Mileage/service forms part of the warranty of the engine, so I do as I'm told! biggrin

I have enjoyed mine a lot so far. Still on twins with a full 3" exhaust system running about 0.9 bar (0.2 bar or so above factory levels), Ohlins DFVs and sticky tires. Haven't had a major issue yet aside from needing to swap out my original twins (over 80k on those) for good used ones which cost about £150 before labour. I did a 1,000 mile round trip to Anglesey and through Snowdonia last year and it didn't miss a beat. 24 mpg highway if I stay around 80 or below.

It's quicker than most things despite only putting down about 300 horsepower in its current configuration because it only weighs about 1280kg. It will hit about 135mph on the Bentley Straight at Snetterton and the only things that pass me on tracks are more expensive cars pushing 450+ for the most part.

Currently being resprayed. Love it to bits.
