Ford have been playing that game as long as anyone else as well.

They managed to get the Escort Twin Cam homolgated into Group 2 (min 1000 examples to be made in 12 consecutive months) in 1968, when they had only built less than 25 of them, by parking them at Boreham in a row in front of a hundred or so visually identical looking Ermine White Escort 1300GT's with their front bumpers and badges all removed, in the hope the FiA wouldn't decide to randomly pick a car at the back to inspect
In fact, in the 3 years total production run of the Twin Cam, Ford built less than 900 cars in total, let alone 1000 in 12 months

the main problem is they're taking too long to manufacture and ship physical cars and as suggested by OP will be effectively late to the party

I'd agree with this. The initial massive impact may have waned by the time they finally emerge. I think that once you get to a certain point performance becomes redundant as a selling point - I read the recent ferrir Superfast article and thought 212mph - ho hum. The Ford GT road cars will still be inextricably linked to the GT race cars (and the campaigns in both IMSA and WEC championships), and that alone will probably hold them in good stead for a long, long time.

Once they are let loose and tested (hopefully by the likes of Pistonheads, etc) it could change again - if they are outstanding in terms of performance and driver input, they may well recapture the attention again.

When I were a'lad there seemed to be annual competition between Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghini for bragging rights.
Barely a weeks goes by, now, without some teaser or stat or release of something that is prettier, bigger, faster, and/or more expensive.
I'm no longer looking forward to anything....
Before you've finished reading and digesting the stats or imagery of something wonderful, there's a rumour or an article that already suggests that what you've looked at is old-hat.

That Ferrari is astonishing, the Chiron is an ugly masterpiece, the 720S is..... fast....
The Holy trinity have come and gone... I wonder how many kids have them on their bedroom walls...
and of course the ultimate marketing movement by Ford, did the job at LeMans (any marketing seen, based on that?) and the road going product is not this week's news, not next week's news, not next month's news...but between a year or TWO years away ?!
I imagine the product planners and engineers are well aware of what they're up against, but from my armchair, their 'supercar' won't be by the time anyone drives it....

and I understand how people get all moist about such a dramatic looking thing. But drama does not necessarily equal either attractive all beautiful.

It's like Ford started with all the skill and best intentions at the front, hints and nods to the original and then had suffered a mild seizure whilst doing the roof and fell over a collection of rulers and LSD.
Wide and low is good
But not when it's knifed and attacked at the rear.
I'm no massive fan of the 720S but it's treatment of design vs aero is much much better IMO.

I wasn't taken by it when I got up close and personal with the grey one at LeMans last year. It was dramatic and exciting to see it in person, it being so new and edgy...added to, by watching and listening to the racer versions on track....It just didn't remain long with me...and seeing all the press shots and oh so slow reveals via You tube for the customer deliveries, I've gotten used to and started to dislike the whole thing aft of the A pillars...too many straight edges and junctions...
So what currently floats my boat style wise?
I like what Porsche and Ferrari do (especially the FF), and the latest Aventador S looks very clean. I prefer a cleaner look to all the flappy, winglet, holes and vents stuff... I haven't witnessed much progress since the F1...although the 8C hits every spot...
