Lol this thread is a joke.

You should not have told them about the engine tuning. They probably would not have cottoned on.

But you modded it and it broke, you have no hope.

Also nearly £5k is a rip off. I could have it sorted for half that.

Enjoy!
Yes they would cotton on it would identify when they hooked it to the diagnostics and flagged a TD1

and people ask me why I got rid of my RS5 as soon as it started saying "Gearbox fault" as it was out of warranty with Audi frown

It does seem that Audi have had a lot of gearbox issues in the last 15 or so years.
I bought a B6 S4 fully aware of both the timing chain and gearbox potential for borkage. Only bought it because the engine failures mean that buying a 2nd hand gearbox was not too ruinous. I wouldn't touch any car now outside warranty if it has a reputation for anything too expensive as a common failure.

I wouldn't gripe about a particular manufacturer, as they all have some failures.... but Audi seems to have a LOT of problem gearboxes.

ahhh the mythical TD1.
All that means is ECU has been flashed. Doesn't mean it's aftermarket software. there's no easy way to tell without getting into checksums and what not.
Not to say that it won't be picked up but OP has ensured that it will by telling them. rolleyes

Then his little tiff with the sticker on the windscreen.....wonder why they won't help him!

If the ECU has been flashed then that's all Audi need to know that it's not OEM.

Realistically the only way Audi were going to offer goodwill on this - because that's what it is, it's a modified car with no extended warranty - would be if the OP was doing serious money with them to the point where the relationship is worth more to them than the cost of repairs.

To be fair to Audi, I don't know how anyone can be expected to warranty a product that has been tampered with. They provide that warranty (which doesn't exist in this instance anyway) based on a quantifiable risk. Modification renders that void.

Yes it means its been flashed, if Audi havent done it then any warranty claim is rejected, there is no need to go into the checksums but simply look at the flash count , not that the car is in warranty anyway

There were no problems with B6 S4 gearboxes. The auto was a ZF thats as bombproof as any out there and the manual, bar the stupidly short gearing, was also fine.

I don't see why you don't sue. You have very little to lose. They will likely settle.
Are you kidding? Second owner, out of warranty and mapped? I've seen a few of these threads, one involving a Seat Leon Cupra R a good few years back where people feel that the manufacturer should contribute or repair for free. If you mess about with a car (and I do it too with cars), you have to accept that if something goes wrong you have to foot the bill.

I feel sorry for the OP because the situation is a bit of a nightmare but I can't see how Audi is liable in any way or form.

Op I think in this case you're just going to have it repaired by a specialist, the car was out of warranty & that really is the end of it.

Without the map you MIGHT have got some good will from Audi but it wouldn't have been much, so the 4k the specialist is quoting means you'll be spending less than you would at Audi with the goodwill gesture.

So get it to the specialist & get the ball rolling.

guys: thanks for replies, these alone have me chuckling in my seat as I read the responses.

I'm truly glad that most can see the funny side of this and thanks for the links above, I'll be sending them on there too. The smallprint can be read pretty easily a few feet from the car, I added my number asking for donations and I'm thinking of setting up a 'justgiving' web page :-)

I did enquire about just changing out the box and apparently its 'coded to the car, loom, ecu and engine' for these models. Individual components (or large assemblies like gearboxes) apparently aren't interchangeable on these cars.

It's unconfirmed, but I will ask about on this too. My son drove up earlier and took a couple of pics, which I'll post on a new thread, again, just for my own amusement and if it does manage it's way back to a decision maker at Audi, all the better. Im out for a curry tomorrow night, but I sort of expect the cops before the weekend. But that'll be another conversation about private land etc.
Surely the small print would be more truthful if it read:

Yes, but what I'm saying is that just because the car has been flashed doesn't mean it's non-genuine software or has been "remapped".

A VW/Audi vehicle which goes in for the emissions recall will have a TD1 flash.
If you change the ECU due to a failure from one of the other many variants of VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat which use the same ECU but different software and flash the correct software on then you will have TD1.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying that the OP should be excused but I'm saying that TD1 doesn't proove that aftermarket software is on the ECU. Which is the issue unfortunately frown

As you say, car is outside of warranty anyway, so has no bearing on things biggrin

Mackies will do a good job on the box.

They have fixed 3 of my friends cars gearboxs, a VW Caddy, a W8 Passat and a Disco3 auto.
All have been done quickly and have had no further issues.

I would get them to check the box oil that Audi filled it with, as a wrong oil would really leave them on a limb.

The Disco 3 was the 6 speed ZF and was £3185 to rebuild with a new torque converter. It had covered 160+k though and gubbed the shaft for 5-6 gears, not the low miles of your car.

OP, if you're going to bother with a sign like that, the small print should surely include all the relevant details.

Devils Advocate.. what does a bucket of oil prove beyond being a bucket of oil? It doesn't prove anything conclusively. I could say that Audi filled my car with shaving foam but saying it and proving it are two different things.

Key difference is that a flash done by Audi will have a record of it on their servers tied to the car's VIN. Aftermarket flash won't have that, therefore it's obviously been done aftermarket.

Anyway, in this instance, I'd want Audi to at least do another flush of the ATF and change the filter for what was confirmed to be the correct spec and then run it through an adaption process. After all, according to the OP, after Audi ran it through an adaption process (testing the kiss points or whatever they called it), it was ok for a few days. If the oil was the wrong spec, then it will start misbehaving again pretty soon as the oil isn't behaving as the TCU is expecting.

If that still didn't fix it, then it's time to escalate and start looking at rebuild options. OP has burned his bridges with Audi now so he's on his own whatever he does.

I had a DSG gearbox issue on my car, thankfully I eventually managed to convince Audi to fix it although I did have to pay a small contribution. If you check on the Audi owner forums the Audi DSG seems to suffer more than it's fair share of failures.

Also if it's just the mechatronic controller unit that's gone, you don't need to change the whole gearbox, you can change just the circuit board for the v2 version which doesn't break for a lot less than £10k.

What do you hope to achieve by parking your car in Audi's car park with your sign?

The car wasn't covered by warranty, which means that Audi are entirely within their rights to refuse any repair or goodwill, regardless of whether you'd had it mapped or not. Yes, there are instances of goodwill being offered on cars with FASH, but having the history never guarantees anything outwith warranty.

The major issue is the aftermarket remap. If being out of warranty was going to knock your chances of Audi helping, having the engine software tampered with has killed them stone dead.

Being a smart ar$e with a sign won't change anything

The engine mod really isn't the issue (it is a free pass for Audi to walk away) these gearboxes aren't the most reliable units but the real issue is the car was well out of warranty but the OP still feels he should get some goodwill from Audi!

Most people would take their out of warranty car to a gearbox specialist rather than get turned over by the main dealer who has no interest in repairing a gearbox but will happily replace it for 10k.
