London Emmisions Surcharge - 'The Banger Tax'
Discussion
I still do not understand why people voted for this annoying little oxygen thief to be the mayor of London.
The area being zoned off is only central London so it's not a big deal my worry would be they might soon try to extend it to the same area as applies to older commercial vehicles which was an area not far off as wide as just inside the M25.

Yeah, hope if so - half the above comment was borne of frustration.
The news articles seem to suggest it affects cars but TFL's website says all vehicles?
If you use the vehicle checker it seems to exclude 2 wheeled bikes. The news articles seem to suggest it affects cars but TFL's website says all vehicles?
@akirk, just a cost exercise, isn't it? If it's cheaper stay in a cheap cab/tube-able hotel and get the train home in the morning, rather than driving 90 miles at 1am. Or pay the charge and drive to/park in Central London. Or park outside the zone and cab/tube it to there. Lots of options, and can't see that those visits will stop as a result of an extra £20 cost.
it is a cost exercise, but it is not £60 - that is my current cost - this takes it to over £200 a year...
obviously to well built PH directors (of which I am one!) this is no issue...
but it might be enough to make the decision to no longer do work with the charity I support...
I guess what I am saying is that the decision could be seen as reducing car journeys into the capital, however that can have one of two consequences...
- change trip to public transport / cycling / walking
- not make the trip
for those who work in the city... or other parts of London affected by this, then I am sure that there will be a move to alternatives and that is great - for those where there is a less solid link, then the consequence may be to not make the trip...
of course that might be seen as a positive, less people and pollution - but has there been consideration of what was being done by those people and what loss there might be - perhaps it is not considered significant, but I can think of several organisations who will be affected quite significantly by this, if they stopped operating in London, perhaps that might mean less jobs, less taxes, less rates? who knows...
but where has been the exercise to actually understand what the consequences will be - or has there been a simple assumption and an easy tax opportunity spotted?

"Discounts and exemptions
If you live in the Congestion Charge zone and your vehicle is registered for a Residents' Discount you will receive a 90% discount, meaning you pay £1 per day for the Emissions Surcharge."
Doesn't that mean that essentially your road tax has gone up £365 if you were paying £295 for an old car?

the standard answer on here is that everyone on here is a wealthy, powerfully built Company Director for whom a few hundreds is small change... sadly that is not the case for many - the point being made is that sometimes there can be unforeseen consequences...
This is terrible. All these poor Londoners.
I live up north in Cheshire; lovely rural area with lots of twisting B roads, mostly very quiet and plenty of room to open the taps, blast around and hoon
My heart goes out to all the people in central London, queueing nose to tail in the their expensive cars and diesel SUV's and soon to be paying for the pleasure

Is it charged if you use your car on a certain day, so probably not £365 - or is it charged anyway irrespective of that?If you live in the Congestion Charge zone and your vehicle is registered for a Residents' Discount you will receive a 90% discount, meaning you pay £1 per day for the Emissions Surcharge."

Interesting to see the Classic car club Member's exemption.
I might start up the "fk You London Mayor Classic Car Club" and charge £10 a year per car for members, and then propose a daily "Your house to your work" Classic car rally.
Swearing Filter decapitalises ( unintended pun) the F btw, not me.
Up to a year ago, I had spent my 53 years as a Londoner living in London. I have to say that since the congestion zone started, I have always driven around the zone if I need to use a car. I have never gone into the zone unless outside the times it is in effect.
If I really needed my own transport to get into the centre, I used my Triumph Street Triple or lately my 2009 Vespa 300.
My worry is that it looks like Khan wants to increase the zone to within the North and South Circular and then on to the M25.
I doubt my Vespa is exempt and my 1998 owned from new BMW is certainly not exempt. Weirdly my 2016 Mustang 5.0 V8 might be OK.
What is this madness. How can forcing individuals and companies to change their vehicles be green.
I know fleet operators that have already spent huge amounts to change their vehicles only for the goal posts to keep changing.
In the late 80s the government persuaded the driving population to get into diesels, thankfully I didn't, and now they are punishing that same group of people.

My 5.7 v8 Dakar is tax exempt - so no charge for me, apart from the tankful of fuel it would cost to get there.
I do think that all the cabs and private hires should be subject to this charge - they and all the busses seem to generate most of the pollution in central london.
The problem with private hires compared to when I was driving one in the 80s, is that there is nowhere to park up in London anymore. I've spoken to loads of the drivers and when they are empty they tend to drive around.I do think that all the cabs and private hires should be subject to this charge - they and all the busses seem to generate most of the pollution in central london.
More congestion and pollution.
