So I've been browsing through the forums for a while now and seen a lot of people with some very nice cars and a lot of people commenting on how they are jealous and envious of them for these. So, if you are someone who's done well for themselves or has a nice car/cars/fleet and you don't mind sharing, what do you do as a job in order to afford to buy and run these cars? Hopefully it isn't too nosy or personal, if you think it is, feel free to ignore this thread altogether!

Side note: slightly curious on another level too as I'm seriously considering a career change in the near future!

Side note 2: PH, hopefully this doesn't clash with your new 'amateur-fishing' clauses in your T&Cs! I just thought it would be interesting to see what different people do as I know there are a lot of users on here who wish they could afford to own even half the cars that some of the others on here do!

I've found the only way to earn money to enjoy better things in life is to either win the lottery, have a silver spoon or work hard.

I decided to start my own company 20 years ago.

I was once told I was very lucky, however someone else suggested the harder I worked the luckier I got.

Bear in mind it's easy to be seen in a nice car or house or at the front of the airplane but the amount of work to achieve the ability to enjoy that lifestyle is probably more than your average Joe is prepared to commit to.

23, and I am in the Real Estate industry. I have been fortunate enough to buy a C63 (No finance) only a few months after I started trading.

Looking to upgrade to a supercar next year.

B2B IT - just quit my employer to start my own company. Wife has a good job too which is a massive help. No kids. nice cars. Horse. Big house. Plenty of holidays. No finance aside from a mortgage which I hope to have paid off by the time I'm 40.

The poster above is right - the harder you work the luckier you get. Do not underestimate the power of personal connections either. Network!

Not at all jealous of the almost run of the mill nicer cars eg RS6, 911, Ghibli , etc as appreciate that I am lucky enough and can purchase such a vehicle. I was born skint poor and so cannot bring myself to spend an obscene amount on such when new.

However, love seeing other people in nice cars. Especially if the car "suits" the individual.

Working (really) hard is the way to save up and strokes of luck on the way help.

I've chosen bricks n mortar over cars purely as the family expands and their quality of life becomes more important

That said I still have my 306 track car to keep me sane

I work for a big corporate in the IT sector rather than myself and that has panned out pretty well so far (I'm 33, hats off to the chap with a c63 at 23!)

I'm an automotive engineer. I've always made the most of what I have. I don't waste money and I've always tried to buy cars that are in demand, at the best price possible so when it comes to resale, they never cost me anything - outside of running costs etc.

I've adopted this approach with the other hobbies in my life (hi-fi & guitars) which means I'm able to upgrade significantly with as little outlay as possible.

Sold my last car for 1200 quid. Put another 1800 (most of my savings) towards my new one. It's green as fk.
Working for yourself is a good way to make money. I don't, which is why I don't have expensive things. frown

Work, and what I haven't got I don't spend.

That's why I drive a 14 year old "E" class Merc (worth about £3k) and am perfectly happy with it.

I even get people in their brand new little shatbox who are jealous of it.

Senior executive in transportation ,then Telecom ,then did some global consulting followed by current activities which include director of some public companies (not powerfully built). Amuse myself by occasionally writing for car magazines. Have a few cars ranging from worthless to reasonably interesting. No real interest in going the supercar route but will replace the DD next year and add one car net in the next few years though probably my last sports car

Long career of hard work for others and lots of travelling around and stress, now working in a two-person partnership with a portfolio of roles and having a whale of a time basically serially starting new businesses and helping people with ideas to realise them properly, all in the property industry.
