I hear this kind of thing a lot, having worked in IT for quite some time.

I think the biggest problem a lot of IT staff have is that they don't understand the business they are supporting. So you get generic answers, a lack of empathy and what feels like a total lack of help!

I deal with a number of hosted IT providers who have their own help desks and some of the staff sounds like they've got something wrong with them. Yet I'm sure if you asked them to fix something they'd be pretty good.

I'm a full time automotive engineering student, also working part/full time in fast food a few pound above minimum. Total annual income around 20k. Currently in a sub 10k astra gtc and a sub 1k Bandit 600. Considering a nice car on pcp, stupid and irresponsible I'm aware, but I really want a straight 6

I agree with earlier posts regarding the "just work harder" comments.
The job I do you're given work by the office for the day, they have a good idea how long everything will take and how many hours you'll be doing that week. It is their policy to keep overtime to a minimum. So while the basic of the new job was better, there is very little overtime.

Work as a Contract Manager for an Energy & FM Business

24 and only have a DS3 THP and a Classic 1293cc Mini as I waste about £500 a month on beer alone...

I'm the same age as you but started working within the energy industry at 19, it used to pay very well but now it doesn't seem like a sustainable industry to be part of banghead

i work two jobs, make around £34k gross...no kids, no mortgage, single, no debts aside from student loan.

Running two cars is definitely a luxury, but I know a time will come in the next few years when one will go to fund a mortgage deposit...so enjoying them while i can.

I pick up £36k at the moment but this is set to increase to £41k shortly not sure if that is "good" or not. Based in Chester and only finished Uni 2.5 Years ago so doesn't seem too bad money wise to me.

My role is mainly FM rather than Energy however... I am currently working on a JV with a council and energy is only as small part of it.

Very few of the people that I know who are both happy and wealthy (and have the nice toys) are employed. Working for yourself - business or freelance make a huge difference both in personal happiness, and long term financial outlook.

A quick way to lose money is to buy deprecating assets without the ability to off set it with investments. The absolute guaranteed way to lose money quicker than anything else, is to marry badly...

Biggest trick I missed in the past is the 'keep on investing' rule - sweat every asset you have... If you don't think you have good enough assets/skills to sweat - then go create some or just go learn stuff...

I'd agree with those saying work harder.

But on the other side I would also say examine what you are currently spending money on. Keep a spending diary, try to do it for a full month some results might shock you a little and make you think about where the money could be going (car/house/holiday etc). I did this a couple of years ago, made some changes, set up standing orders to ensure I wouldn't waste the money elsewhere.

In fairly short order I had saved a few grand (not life changing but could help a lot) just by being more prudent, I would also advise you to pay off debts if you have any, it obviously means your savings won't grow so fast but when you are debt free divert that standing order or whatever payment method you were using into savings, you won't miss the money but you'll appreciate it when you check your balance. This gets you 'ahead of the game' and less likely to 'need' to borrow in future (and less of a problem if you choose to).

I know this might all sound very simplistic, but you can work hard all you like, if you are not watching the outgoings then you can very easily squander what you have worked so hard to get.

I've always bought with what I've had spare in the bank, as I've always liked old low tech cars that I can tinker with, it's been ideal.

Unfortunately I've been declared disabled by means of having a terminal illness and get to lease one from Motability, so I should have the use of a new car in a week or two.

Never you mind

Jesus, I'm sorry to hear that, the illness rather than the car smile

Puts having a flash motor into perspective. Good luck with it all.

Don't really own anything interesting, got a near immaculate '89 Golf tucked away in the garage and a sheddy 3 series that cost £750.

Sell used prestige so thankfully get my fix at work. Get all the advantages but no cost really.

Have debated about taking the dive on something half decent, I yearn for a V8 Vantage (~£32k) and could probably stomach the finances, at least for a year or so. Would have an exit route as I'm in the trade but I can't bring myself to do it.
Mid mortgage process on a much bigger house at the moment so I'd have to be mad.

Got a long game plan however, it will all come in time.

Nope .... I deal with three on a daily basis and they're all utter s**t.

I once requested a routing change for a class C subnet ... The "engineer" changed it for the entire class A instead, essentially crippling our entire environment.

He did this at 6pm, then he went home. Took them four hours to unpick it.

I have a 9-5 IT job that allows me to satisfy my inner geek without having to spend too much 'extra' time on stuff. I can buy run of the mill stuff and I'm content with my life. Money and its accumulation doesn't interest me at all. I have an average house, I like to read, watch the football and spend time with my daughter and my friends.

Owning a Monaro a few years back was one of the most joyous car experiences I've had.
