What do you do to afford your cars...? If it's not too rude.

Audemars post is actually spot on. I know people who have done well with each of those options listed, including #1 which does exist if, in my experience, you are better with numbers than 99.99999999% of people.
So that's, 7 people in the world that qualify? Unfortunately my maths skills are firmly in the lower 9%.okgo said:
The hatred of 'sales' is a very 'young uni grad' attitude to things. I've heard it time and time again from people how they would do ANYTHING but end up in sales (as if all sales jobs are exactly the same). Guess what, most of them still earn ste money and moan about it
I only have a second hand car, so I'm sure its not of interest to OP. The answer to the question is likely much more about how people prioritise their income vs how much they earn. There are (by definition) going to be a lot of people on average money on this forum, yet the general standard of car is much higher. There are also huge national divides, and if you're lucky to have a well paid job in a cheap part of the country, then clearly you're straight away going to have a lot more money to spend on non essential things.
The reality is that with a few execptions (obvious ones include Military, Policeman, fireman, state only medical professional) we're all in sales in one form or another.I only have a second hand car, so I'm sure its not of interest to OP. I'm probably the wrong person to ask as my car is worth all of £2k. However, to me, its priceless! I simply love driving it, and it makes me feel happy like a kid again, yet anyone could probably afford to buy one.
I'm probably in the minority on here, but money isn't everything to me. I'd rather enjoy my life than work to the bone before popping my clogs before I can enjoy the fruits of my labour; I know a lot of workaholics say they are aiming towards early retirement and all that, but most people are greedy and just want more and more and more, and never really stop working. Before they realise, life has passed them by and they pop their clogs with a Porsche on the drive and a bank balance with quite a few zeros on the end of it that someone else will inherit.
I live a comfortable life with very modest means. I live in a nice house, close to work - I don't have to drive or take public transport. My job isn't going to make me rich but its a decent enough wage for the area I live in, and I quite like it on balance. There's little stress, and I work with a decent enough crowd doing a job I don't mind; it wouldn't have been my first choice, but overall, I can't complain.
I have made some "compromises". I doubt I'll ever own an expensive car because I see it as a waste of money. I have mates who spend £500+ a month on a BMW repmobile, yet I'd rather drive my £2k banger any day. If I want to drive some exotica, then I will do a driving experience day or similar. I don't have kids, although I don't see that as a compromise and so I can actually live a pretty good lifestyle on relatively little.
I've not read the rest of the thread, but I expect it's probably full of willy waving, but I just thought I'd give my point of view to let you know OP that not everyone on PH is a rich company director with 12 cars in the garage, but is nevertheless quite happy with their lot in life. Swings and roundabouts eh?

My brother does this, he runs an LPG converted Saab 9-3 from 1972. He is also the most content man I know. I hope it's working out the same for you. This thread is going to descend quickly into the typical boring dickswinging :-(
I do a job I actually enjoy - which is no way to get rich

That said, it need not always be the case that a well-paying job is not also enjoyable. Or even that money only follows a well paid job. A passive income by way of investment or via an automated business can lead to wealth creation with no time at all being lost to "work" once the initial set up is put in place. Then you are free to enjoy every hour if that is your aim.

+1. The only people I really envy are the ones who are truly happy and content with their lives.I do ok but thankfully I have a built in laziness that prevents me from working too hard. My older brother owns his own accountancy business and has done very well from it. Sadly, approaching his mid 50s, he still works harder than I ever would and has invested every penny he's earned in BTL property. His shopping comes from Asda and he has a very modest lifestyle so has an excess of cash which he invests, instead of doing less and spending more. I often tell him he'll be the richest man in the graveyard.
