I want to start a project car and basically need some ideas of cars which are good for a project. I don't have much experience with mechanics but wanting to learn it all with a project car. I don't have a budget at the moment I just need some ideas of what car to buy.
Thanks in advance

MX5. Can't really go wrong, plenty are cheap and rusty but are fairly easy to repair (mainly sill rust), giving you an opportunity to learn a bit of welding. Engines and engine bays are simple and easy to work around, their is literally hundreds, maybe even thousands of companies out there offering modification kits for the engines, from turbo's and superchargers to fully forged internals and LS swaps.

+1 the MX5.

If it's literally just the experience you're after and you're not bothered about how fun or desirable the motor is I've had good experiences with my Mk4 Golf. Assembles and disassembles very nicely and as soon as you turn up in one outside the breakers yard they start throwing parts at you for pennies.

If you want to learn about mechanics best start with a non Japanese car - as they rarely break down !

Want to take something apart and put it together - start with a mower.

Start with a mower, then buy something classic. An MGB is a great starter - they occasionally go wrong, parts are cheap, and just about every job is a doddle.

Another vote for the Mx5. In fact, I've just done exactly that having purchased this on a Saturday.

Got fairly cheap considering spec with a few suspension geometry / tyre issues to sort. All preventive welding on mine has been sorted though as I'm not fun sorting rot.

Start with something you actually want when you've finished otherwise you might lose interest. I wouldn't worry about choice in terms of reliability or ease to work on aslong as its pre 2000 and isn't too rare in terms of parts. Just make sure it's something you like. E36 or any 90's jap sports coupe (MX5 included biggrin) would be my choice.
