Had a couple of close calls this morning with idiots pulling out of side roads without looking. First one I decided in the split second to drive around the offending van (slight blind bend also). I think if I decided on the emergency stop option I would have hit him. The other I couldn't do anything as it looked like I was going to get T boned.

In the first instance, does the idiot pulling out get off scot-free?

Depends how honest they are. A car swing right across the front of my dad. Dad avoided him and hit a wall. If he'd clipped the car it would be an open and shut case of other driver at fault. As he didn't there wad a risk that the insurers would say "so you drove your car into a wall. Full stop."
As it happens the other guy had the decency to own up.

If they leave the scene of the accident (which I wouldn't doubt for a second), then by default yes they would. The only way you could arguably catch them out in that instance would be with a dash-cam.

That's why in any situation like this I hit the brakes but don't go around the vehicle unless I can see the other side of the road is 100% clear.

Having said that your natural reaction is to swerve around the car.

If you're that bothered about that scenario, get a dashcam.

^^^^ This. Saves a lot of argument of who did what.

Yeah, dash cam is defiantly on the list of things to do now.

I hate the idea of dashcams but am thinking of getting one.

Last February a van changed lanes on me on the A3. He admitted liability in the end but only after I had to argue with my insurance company to not accept split liability. Dashcam footage would have cleared up the liability with 30 secs viewing and saved a lot of hassle.

In November near Heathrow police van cut across the car in front of me. He braked in time. I rear ended him...not hard but enough to split his rear bumper. He got quotes and I paid for the damage but it also cost me a couple of hundred for new indicator and headlight washer.

In the split second I checked the mirror and over my should to pin point where the blue flashing lights were coming from I lost the time I had to brake. All very slow speed but I didn't think police should just go through a junction even lit up. I may or may not have had a claim but would have been good to have the option. In my defence it was night time and raining...

No, it's neither Police nor time nor rain that caused it. You were too close to the car in front.

Drunk group of lads stood on the curb looking like they might cross the road. Caused the recently passed (green P plate) driver ahead of me to emergency stop. She was straddling both lanes (4 lane road). I was probably too close trying to encourage her to move the fk over into one lane. Damp road, no abs, locked up and tapped her bumper.

The lads never left the curb until after I hit the back of her!!! I know this as I was watching them in case they bolted across the road, and thus missed the moron in front until too late.

The worst is when they look at you THEN pull out infront of you.

It's like "Oh look an audi i'll cut him up".

My dad was in a similar situation around 3 years ago. A woman in an Audi A3 didn't appear to see him on his motorbike until the very last moment. She pulled out of the side road in front him, about half of her car crossing the give way markings on the junction before she came to a stop, my dad instinctively swerved and lost control of the bike. He was pretty bashed up and concussed. Took a couple of months to recover from his injuries. Insurance tried to go 50/50, woman in the Audi claimed she didn't pull out at all. Eventually she was found to be at fault and the claim was settled, but it took about 3 years for the insurers to pay out.

If only there was some way inexperienced drivers could warn other road users that they might do unexpected things, so giving more space would be a good idea.

Perhaps something similar to the red-on-white L-plate, but easily differentiated?

Helpful.
We were pulling away from a set of lights

Almost crashed a few times by assuming the moron driver infront is going to go when lights turn green etc... and they don't because too busy on their phones. Learn't pretty quickly to check the car and not the lights.

I've been quite tempted to get a dashcam in the past - reason being I've been in one accident before where someone pulled out of a side road and into the front passenger side of my car and despite it being quite obvious who was at fault was settled 50-50. My concern would be that in a situation where I exceeded the posted limit by 5mph (the limit having changed down from 60 to 40 and me not braking quite enough within the given time) could the dashcam be used against me in the case of an unmarked car stopping me?

Over here there's fking idiots have no qualms about pulling out from a junction into your path, one road in particular I can guarantee that the car at the junction will stop, look at you coming towards them for 5-10 seconds then pull out, really fking winds me up. They also don't even bother to accelerate to the appropriate speed as to not make you have to jump on the brakes.
