Doesn't effect me. I can read/send text messages via the touch screen built into my dashboard while doing 70mph. Must be safe because the law hasn't banned it.

Where's the whoosh parrot when you need it?

I got the point, it was more just a general point about people moaning about touch screens in cars, mine has one, i dont use it while driving because its dangerous.

Slightly off-topic I know, but does this also cover the use of CB radios/hand held microphones too?

Reason I'm asking is that on programmes like Top Gear/grand Tour you regularly see Jeremy & Co. driving with one hand while holding a conversation with his compadres, with the microphone in the other - often wondered if it was legal.

It shows how attitudes change - nowadays I think that this is not setting a good example!

Exact same reason I don't have the radio on or carry passengers ever. It's all added distractions that could cause me to have an accident.

I try not to look out of the Windows, for the same reason.

I'm fairly sure that's why they use handheld mikes on TG because it is legal - legal subject to the fact that if you have an accident whilst using one then it crosses to careless/dangerous.

I like your safe thinking. I shall try this tomorrow.

Ignoring the parrot, imagine they did make it illegal to operate your car whilst operating your car - that would be quite funny ;0

The trend towards 'Tesla style' touchscreens is worrying because there's no really good reason for it, it's gadgetry for the sake of gadgetry.

Looks cool at first but I can find my heating controls and other switches easily without looking where I'm going - but on a touchscreen I have to look and poke and wait and poke again and - frankly it's fking rubbish.

iDrive and other similar systems are little better - we really are st at designing good DRIVING positions in cars, even Ferrari put the starter button on the wheel (something you use ONCE - it could be under the passenger seat and not be inconvenient!!)

Excellent - 2 strikes. Hopefully there'll be a lot of unemployed white van drivers and teenage girls.

Apart from its initial daftness, it has a point. I have iDrive in mine which I find easy to use on the move but I test drove a car the other week that only had touchscreen and while fiddling with it found myself drifting lanes so left it well alone. I'm sure I'd get used to it if I owned but it was an 'interesting' experience all the same.

Thanks! I don't see much difference in risk between using a phone or a microphone, but the law is the law, and the rationale doesn't have to be clear.

Bit of a numpty question but I sometimes put my phone over the car sat nav screen and use it to run Google nav

Is this now an instant 6 points, even if I dont touch it?
What about the same scenario in a phone cradle?

Cheers

The comparison between talking to passengers, listening to the radio and taking a phone call has been comprehensively debunked by numerous scientific tests.

All we need now is some police cars on the road to catch offenders. (Seeing a police car in Scotland anywhere other than in a major city is now a rarity, and I haven't seen a traffic car for months now)
