Evening all,

Looking at buying a used E70 X5 and have been looking at the BMW extended warranties that are available,

Does anyone know if you still need to have a full service history to be able to take one out? can't find any reference to it in their T&C's?

Not sue on full BMW history.

But of you do take one out and sub 60k miles but close, do it monthly, the price never increases that way.

I've taken one out or should I say I've continued with the used car warranty I was given with the used car. I've researched other extended warranty coverage and the BMW one is more comprehensive and cheaper. I'd recommend it for peace of
Mind as it includes recovery. I guess BMW servicing is a part of the t & c requirements.
I've always found bmw customer services very helpful.

Doesn't need to have BMW service history but needs to have followed the BMW service intervals and used OEM parts.

My X5 crept over 60k and I got a quote of over £2,000 per annum for full comprehensive cover with no excess. Thank goodness that I negotiated two years cover when I bought it last year AUC.

This is stated quite a lot on PH, and I switched from annual to monthly as a result. However, whilst it may have been the case before, isn't accurate in my case - I've just received a letter from BMW telling me that my premium is increasing from next month (the T&Cs state that the monthly premium can be reviewed and increased, so I was never really quite sold on the premium staying the same forever).

It's only a few quid a month mind.

I think that'll be a result of IPT rather than Mondial lifting it.

There's the same effect on keeping it monthly over 100k. If you take out an annual policy over 100k, it's Driveline cover only. Have it on monthlies before that and it continues for as long as you have a policy in place, regardless of mileage.

Letter stated that it was increasing due to the car getting older (2008, 65K miles), and increased likelihood of things going wrong.

I have recently had a lot of work done on the car - new iDrive controller, new head unit, new diversity module, new rear wiring loom - so that may be contributing as well.

Monthly does seem to be the way to go anyway, as I had looked last year at the annual renewal cost (was still on sub-60K at that point) and it suddenly increased post 60K miles, but just not guaranteed to be a constant premium.

It can increase, but only at their standard rate, you don't suddenly jump into the post 60k mile price.

My X3 was £30.50 a month sub 60k miles, it jumped up to around £65 a month post 60k miles.

Yes, they seem to do this periodically now.

Sorry to hijack this thread but sort of related. I'm looking at extending my X3 warranty with Warranty direct. I intend to carry on the bmw service history however when it went in for a brake fluid service they said the rear brake pads were low at 3mm. They quoted £300 just to replace pads. I know my local independent who I've used for years and is very trustworthy will do it for under half.

My question is if I get my indy to replace the odd ware and tear part would this invalidate an extended warranty either with bmw warranty or warranty direct?

Also the car is under a pcp with bmw for next couple of years. Does this mean all repair and servicing has to be done with bmw?

Why not just go with BMW warranty?

Have you had a quote?

I always use genuine parts and fit myself, how will they know?

The BMW/Mondial warranty allows you to use other garages, as long as you are using original parts and the garage is VAT registered.

Should be in the T&Cs that you can look up online.

Unfortunately I'm a pretty rubbish mechanic. The bmw warranty seemed quite expensive. There were lots of options but full comprehensive £100 excess with non emergency is about £47 a month.

Warranty direct supposedly covers some wear and tear items (obviously not brake pads) again using bmw for repairs comes out at £50 per month with £50 excess. The plus of this is being able to use and indy vat registered to do the odd repair.

I'll have to check but I think everything needs to be done at Bmw with their own warranty. Looking at the T&C on the pcp contract it says it needs a bmw service just hoping the odd item done at a indy doesn't cause conflict with the pcp contract.

Any any experience with Warranty direct?

My last BMW ,e91 was on 143000 miles when I sold it, I was still running the rolling month bmw warranty with £100 excess. This cost me £70 month. Only servicing/warranty work was done at BMW main dealer. Everything else was done at a friend's garage. This was never an issue with BMW and I never had a claim rejected.

I also took out the breakdown cover as well. I had to use it whilst in Belgium last year. Brilliant service from a dedicated call handler from the moment I rang to when I finally got my car back. Definitely worth the £7 permonth

Here's my latest copy of BMW's Insured Warranty Policy, and your question should be answered on pages 21-23, where I have highlighted the relevant text.

Briefly, you can service your car at any VAT registered garage in accordance with BMW's Service schedule and using BMW parts or equivalent. But you must take the car in to a BMW garage for work under the insured warranty.
