I'm going to need a car in June for a family holiday. Ideally, I'd like an XC90 or similar. Are there any recommendations of broker? Pick up will be in London and drop off Manchester airport. I have US insurance which will cover the hire car.

Is your US insurance on your credit card or is it your own personal motor insurance policy?

If you have adequate cover book on Expedia.COM for cdw-exclusive rates.. If you book your flights there too you'll get a discount on your car.

Insurance is through our own cars. So, will follow your advice.

Regarding flights, booked on points. The U.K. Make it so expensive to fly back to the US through taxes that we are going to spend a week in the Alps before returning. But, here is something I didn't know, when booking on points with United, they didn't charge points for the Manchester to Geneva flight. So, my Newark-LHR MAN to Geneva Geneva to Newark cost less than it would for Newark to LHr and back.

I can't see anyone agreeing to accept your US insurance.

Hertz and Avis certainly do Discoveries, and it will need to be one of the big boys to drop off so far away from collection.

Insurance is one to look out for. I've seen previously people recommending that you try changing your country location to benefit from cheaper rates. Often the reason the rates are cheaper is the assumption of insurance. For example, the last time I rented in the U.K. It did automatically change the package on offer to be Americanized. This meant they didn't include insurance. I must admit I didn't know it was an option. And, they don't require proof of insurance. That is crazy but true. I don't recall who with but it was one of the big ones on an XC90.

I've been working in car rental for nearly 15 years and 10 of those was in Operations with a major car rental company. In all that time I've not once ever seen a US Auto insurance company cover you for renting a car in a foreign country.

I'm not sure why so many people used to arrive in the UK from the US and think it did, but I think where many people get confused is that your liability extends to car rental in the US. Liability will always be included in your rental in the UK, so you don't need to worry about that.

You do need to cover the CDW though, so you'll either need to have good benefits on your credit card, increase your current benefits, or purchase the rental company CDW (£££). If you don't have CDW, then you'd be best booking on a European domestic broker site (www.expedia.co.uk) to get a good level of basic coverage.

Hertz always used to carry a good stock of Volvo, Thrifty had some Land Rover stuff, but I've not been near a car rental car park for a good few years now.

Hi Chucklehead, I found the incident very strange as well when they showed me the hire documents saying that my own car insurance would cover the charges. They told me that by booking on the .com site it automatically selected insurance provided by renter. This was at London City airport in 2013.

But, I am risk adverse so I had already checked the status of my credit cards that I had used for the rental and that does cover other countries except Italy, Ireland and a limited number of other ones.

OK, just checked and my Auto insurance does not cover outside of the US. But, my credit card does and they have remove the restrictions in certain countries.

booking on .com usually automatically provides you with a CDW-exclusive product when you hire outside the US, and yes, it's normal for credit cards to exclude Italy, Ireland, Israel, Jamaica and frequently Australia and New Zealand. I've no idea why you were told your auto policy would cover you in 2013, probably someone that didn't know better or didn't want an argument about selling CDW!

Your liability will be included and with cover on your credit card for CDW you should be fine. There are occasionally exceptions for type of vehicle, length of stay, value of vehicle etc. One particular card provider considered a Fiat as an exotic vehicle... Worth checking if you are concerned, but i'd imagine you'll be ok.
