5 door and convertible just don't go together really they're all mainly 3 doors. I was looking at A3 Cab but doesn't fit your 5 door requirement.

I think you need to work out what you really want if you want a convertible that means you're happy with a three door as long as it has a panoramic roof correct?

What do you need a 5 door for? If its transporting people in the back then you'll struggle to get a convertible that is no bigger than a Golf that can fit much more than child seats in the back unless you sit closer to the steering wheel than Mr Magoo.

The Cactus has a decent sunroof:

Has a good amount of room inside and is shorter and narrower than a Golf. However the Golf can be had with a big sunroof as well...

you guys are right about the convertible not going with a 3dr so I took that out, I'm fine with just a sunroof if there's anything with that around

I hadn't heard of the Cactus before, it looks interesting actually, but seems fairly boring to drive (and not quite capable of 0-60 in 9 seconds?), I'd rather something a bit faster and more fun (doesn't have to be a fiesta ST or anything, just on the level of a Swift Sport would be good)
A Swift Sport then...?

thanks, these two are my best options if I can afford a decent one. do either of you have any idea which of the two would be more 'fun' to drive? ive heard the golf described as a smooth/reliable drive but not exactly exciting
I just got rid of a MK6 GTi for the top end of your budget. It was a fun car to me. I'd say it would be more fun than the A3 as I'm pretty sure it's a fair bit lighter. Don't quote me on that though.

Interior was great and was pretty rapid. 0-60 in 6.9. Handled well, too.

mk6 most likely be a bit better as it's a newer mk, not much difference between them though from what I've read.

the mk6 gti/r was what I though of reading your post

Mk6 Golf Gti is what I think you need or a GTD.

Cactus rides and handles quite nicely. Not sure if they even offer a petrol.

buy the cheapest you can, on paper they hold there value well, in reality they can drop. Having said that i've probably lost £5000 on mine over 4 years, but thats based on me selling it. Mines high spec and price guides don't always take this into account. The only issue i think mine has is a failing fuel pump, but it hasn't broken yet.

A 5 door cooper with chilli pack and sunroof should be in budget, look on the mini site too as i've found sometimes they don't appear on the likes of autotrader.

If you buy from a dealer and then go and trade in at 2 years I bet trade in won't be far off £8k but you may get £10-11k selling private IMO of course.
