RE: Honda Accord Type R: Catch It While You Can
Discussion
I sold mine just over a year ago for relative peanuts, absolutely loved it though. It did the 'only-car' thing superbly, and was great fun to drive.
It also sounded incredible- mine had the Mongoose cat-back exhaust + K&N Typhoon combo
Mine had done north of 140,000 miles when I sold it, but I changed the oil twice-yearly/every 3k miles and the engine was as happy as it at ever been. As long as they have been serviced regularly, the only thing that high mileage is going to effect on these is things like suspension/bushes etc. And of course rust, particularly around the rear bulkhead- I was lucky that mine seemed to be one of the few that had escaped in this regard.
It even had the rare, optional center arm-rest- and was of course in the best colour too
I would love to have another one day, and I still maintain I (just about) preferred it to the DC2 Integra I had before it. The DC2 felt that little bit more special when really pushing it (mainly due to it's lightness), but for me (using them as purely road cars) the instances where you actually got to experience that extra were few & far between. In day-to-day use I found the ATR more fun to drive, more of the time- principally because of the engine (the extra torque and the way it sounded). I also maintain that the ATR steering was even better than the DC2.
It's all down to personal taste though- I would absolutely love to try a DC2 with the H22a engine in it one day, that would be 'Peak Type R' for me
Not the greatest of pictures sadly as they were all spur-of-the-moment phone snaps.
And a picture taken by the previous owner showing the black/purple colour much better:
Sadly had to go to make room for a TVR.

Do a lot of people swap the transmission in the car for a closer ratio one from another model, or at least change the final drive ratio?
I was researching these a while back and I read that the ratios are too wide so you fall out of VTEC with each upshift which hurts acceleration times.

Mine was almost identical to yours, gunmetal alloys, pirates black, tinted rear windows, team heko deflectors on the front only, even the AccordR.org sticker in the identical position! But mine had a single exit exhaust and was lowered a bit more.It also sounded incredible- mine had the Mongoose cat-back exhaust + K&N Typhoon combo

For me it's the only colour I'd consider for them, Pirates black is one of my all-time favourite car colours period in fact.
The other extras had already been done to the car when I got it, but I thought they really set it off nicely.

Plus it had a crazy top speed of 159mph,

Not with 212 bhp it didn't.Fond Honda memories
What BHP were you pushing?
140 on the bowl
Bet the speedo was showing considerably more though
140 seems about right for a car of that power and weight
I squeezed an indicated 146mph out of one once and there was only a few hundred rpm left.
I'm utterly sure it would run into a limiter before it got to even an indicated 159.
Owned a pre facelift which I sold 10 years ago and have regretted it ever since. I test drove one last year expecting it to feel dated and slow - it was still tremendous even now. Would have to be pre facelift for me - looks better at the front and you get the stainless exhaust tips. And for heavens sake, buy one with aircon as they fog up constantly without it. The one recommended doesn't have it...
I have had my Accord Type R for about 9 years now (half of my driving life) and it is still one of the best cars for the money that I have driven. It still does everything I want from it. Driving the little boy to nursery, 280 mile round trips to my office, and still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it.
My wife keeps suggesting that it is time to change it, but without spending 10 to 20 times the amount then I cant think of much that gives me everything that this car can.
And for those that care, over my ownership, it does between 29-31 mpg.
Rust will eventually take her away from me, but until then I think I am just going to keep enjoying it. Then move onto something like an ISF or M3

If you love it that much, visit a decent body shop and pay a few grand to have it properly sorted. Cheaper than an ISF/M3...My wife keeps suggesting that it is time to change it, but without spending 10 to 20 times the amount then I cant think of much that gives me everything that this car can.

It is a great car, but I wouldn't put a couple of grand into the body work, then a couple of grand into engine/suspension etc. I will just enjoy it for what it is, until it is time to give it up.
I have seen ATRs selling for about £1k recently, obviously they are not great examples. A car with 170k miles on like mine is never going to be worth much, whether it is in great condition or not. I would think the fact I have kept it for so long in excellent working order shows how much I love it.

Which correlates nicely with my indicated 146mph.
So, no. Nobody ever did 159mph in a Type R.
