And I think that sums up classy biggrin
It is classy to not need to try / to not have to prove anything / to just buy a car because it does what you want it to do / to not need to pretend you are something you are not...
Classless = classy
It is why traditionally upper and lower classes have got on so well - they don't care what anyone thinks
it is only those who lack confidence as to who they are who feel a need to make statements through their cars...

therefore, by definition - the person defines the car, not the other way around smile
I was going to say something similar. I don't think any cars are classy - they are tools to do a job and so the more nondescript the car the better from a "classy" point of view. The more you are trying to be classy by the car you drive, the less classy you become.

That's not so say that someone in a BMW X6 (for example) couldn't be classy, but they would be classy despite the car they drive not because of it.
The thread is about cars which are classy...so in that context we should be thinking of which cars would be deemed classy if you saw it parked on the high street with no-one in.

There are hundreds of classic cars which are without doubt classy, but it seems the number of cars in current production that could be, you could count on one hand.

My current fleet of classy (classless) cars:
1999 Saab 9-5 2.3 saloon manual, silver green with tan leather, sunroof, 17" aero alloys.
2000 Alfa 156 1.8 saloon manual, dark blue metallic with blue cloth, sunroof, 17" alfa alloys.
1995 BMW e36 320i auto touring, Boston green, black leather, sunroof, 17" M Style alloys.
All between 118-135k miles, immaculate, fully serviced, but not too precious to park on supermarket or train station car park.

Last year also had Mercedes 124 and 208, lovely cars, just not driver's cars.

I don't care what anyone says about the looks but there is no denying that a Lexus SC430 is a classy car.

To me the car is irrelevant rather than the situation it is in. One of our neighbours has a massive house and parked outside is a Vauxhall Omega Estate V6 Elite. Most likely owned from knew. They do own other cars but the Vauxhall looks the most classy. Especially parked next to the new age e-class mercedes.

Not a great photo, but it's an immaculate R170 SLK 200 with the smallest wheels. Classy, I think.
Similar to this, I think:

This is a good point, and comes back to what I've said regarding it being about the associations the car invokes.

But those associations may be moulded depending on other circumstances.

So for example the same car (let say, a slightly tatty but otherwise standard old Golf) parked on a leafy, well-to-do street would be, like it or not, more likely to invoke an association that says the driver is a "classy" person. But the same car seen in the communal car park of a sink estate would be less likely, like it or not, to invoke such an association.

This is not to say that any car parked on a leafy, well-to-do street would imply "classy" though - some would just look incongruous.

It's a car Pat Butcher would have driven in her younger years on the game. Sort of nearing the end of her career when she was having to drop prices to say £10. Probably classy in some places but not so much in others.

Bear with me but as far as normal cars go in a dark colour, I would say the new Renault Megane!

I haven't really noticed any around but I saw one in black today and thought to myself, that's quite a smart-looking hatchback and I was surprised to discover on closer look that it was a Renault. Typically a company whose products that I have traditionally hated but if I was in the market for a new small hatchback, I would definitely consider one.

I think you've nailed it in your first line - classy = classless.

I thought it was called "post a picture of your car then try to justify why you think it counts as classy"

OK. To try and defend my choice, in order to get a "classy" car you either need to spend a lot of money (Range Rover) or think outside the box. The first option doesn't guarantee class, it's down to how you spec it. The second means that none of the most popular choices, Focus, Astra, Golf (apart from the GTI maybe), A3 can qualify either.

To me in my brief encounter, the black Megane looked stylish but not shouty. Quality looked decent, good panel gaps, paint quality etc and the interior looked fairly solid and attractive in design, although I didn't sit in it.

I have never considered the Megane to be classy before, moreso cheap and well-equipped and a bit flaky quality-wise. We had the big-ass Megane and then the previous one that looked so non-descript that I can't even recall what it looks look but this one looks a little Germanic but with a bit more flair (not unlike a SEAT Leon I suppose). Apparently big French cars have class, so why not small ones? If you require a "classy" small 5 door hatchback, what would you suggest? The answer isn't Focus, Astra, Golf, 1-Series, A3 or A-Class, so what is it? The French don't appear to give a s*** about image, which some people would define as classy behaviour...and no I don't own a Megane. Just trying to come up with something that isn't over 20 years old and doesn't cost 6 figures.
