Would you make an offer on a car unseen and over the phone?
I have not bought a car without doing that since 2004. Many dealers, especially main dealers, do considerable business at distance through the internet now. Part of this is offering PX values.

giblet. Are you changing the ISF?
Yup, went all chav a few months ago and bought a Evo X. I'll miss the ISF but can't justify keeping them both. Evans Halshaw offered me a good price surprisingly.

When I bought my last car the entire transaction was done over the phone including valuation of the PX. I guess it depends on the feeling they get over the phone. If they hadn't have been able to do this they'd not have sold me the car as I'd not be driving 150 miles on the offchance I'd get a good deal.

First time I met them in person was the handover.

Obviously the dealer has to take your word for condition, but you have to take the dealers word for condition too. Had I arrived and found the car they were selling was not as they described, I would have walked away. Had I arrived and my pristine PX was less pristine than I'd told them, they'd have told me to jog on and rightly so.
This is the point though, commitment. You were actually buying a car.

Not until they came up with the right numbers - it started as a punt on an already keenly priced example on the off-chance they'd do a deal. Until I'd had a chat I was an aspirational buyer..

Also, don't assume options on your car will actually add any value, usually they only make a car easier to sell, being more attractive rather than actually adding to the price.
This.

When we bought a new Mercedes CLS a few years back, we were "persuaded" by the salesman that a £2000 Command Sat nav was an essential option, and nobody would look at the car without it, when it came to sell.

A year later, when we went to see about upgrading, we were told by the same salesman our "Command" would not add a penny to the p/x price....rolleyes

My old sales manager, when I was selling new/used cars at a main dealer always used to have a great line for people asking for a PX over the phone....."sure, no problem, just hold it up to the phone and I'll take a look"

Made me chuckle every time he said it.

There are may online sites that will give you a market value for your car by simply typing in the reg and the mileage. They all come up with very similar figures for trade in value and retail value.
Recent experience of trying to trade in a 2014 car with 30k for a brand new equivalent was extremely hard work. The first 2 dealers, very large multi franchise market leaders only wanted to offer to clear the finance left on the PCP. They can even show you on their fancy computer that your car is worth no more than they are offering." Honest Gov I don't mind showing you this as we have nothing to hide etc.etc."
Fortunately the 3rd dealer was more old school and offered exactly what the car was worth, £1500 more than the other two. He got the order for the new vehicle.
it matters not a jot what valuation you put on your trade in, you need to find someone willing to pay it.
Sorry to state the obvious but the valuation depends on how anxious the dealer is to sell the new car, and how long it has been in stock. This (again, obviously) applies less to runaround and repmobiles than it does to something a bit different.

You lost me there Lester H. I was ordering a brand new car, not something in stock. Perhaps you are correct and the first 2 dealers had no interest in selling a car they had to order.

Sorry if unclear, I meant a new car in the showroom.

Presumably he still expected a deposit by phone from distance customers..

Stick your car on we buy any car and that will give you a very good idea what you will get offered px, given that most places just put your car out to trade instantly rather than want the risk of it being theirs to sell.
Not always mind, main BMW dealership recently offered me 4.5k more than WBAC.

Indeed I was offered 8k more by BMW dealer than WBAC but they knew what they were buying and what they could sell it for.

This was back in 1994, the internet didn't exist back then (certainly not from an ecommerce perspective), the furthest people bought cars from us was around a 25 mile radius at best.

Download 'MyCarCheck' for free on iphone. Put in your reg, press 'download factsheet', input your current mileage, put your email in, and job done.

The app will show the car's MOT history including advisories, owners, and a ROUGH valuation on your car given the mileage entered.

I highlight rough estimation because it does not consider spec, condition etc etc. It's all for free and i think its blinking marvelous.. certainly helped me buying my last two cars for work.

Blimey, according to that wisebuyers site I'm asking a smidgeon over a £1k less than I should be (plenty of views on AT and an odd call/hang up from Elgin).

But how does the price you are asking for your car actually compare to what others are asking; it's all very well saying that that site says your car should be up for £1k more than you are asking, however if everyone else is asking £1k less, then the lower figure is the correct one?
