I've got a 2 month old, large, well spec'd executive estate car on the drive, along with my wife's 6 month old SUV. So yes I clearly care what they think.

On the other hand, my car is a skoda superb, so although I'm chuffed with it because it's massive and comfy and useful, it's also cheap on company car tax and is still a skoda, so I think you can tell I don't really care. Hardly anything to show off about!

I can't say I'm bothered really, I've got to a point in life where I have a baby girl and a house to finish. That said, the neighbours in my street are all very nice with no edge to them at all, next door does have a nice GTR and brings home some interesting cars every now and then so it's nice to have a chat about cars with someone who clearly likes them.

I don't care what my neighbours think of the car I drive.

Had a few comments from some of them when I was running a old Mercedes.
It was more than 10 years old at the time but the neighbours who like playing "keeping up with the joneses" didn't see the age of it they just saw the badge.
I bought it because I always wanted to own one and liked it so bought it.

My current car was bought because it does what I want and no matter what people think I like it.

My first car when I passed my test was a Reliant robin van.
I still remember the number of people who took the micky & laughed at my three wheeled car.

Strange thing I also still remember the same ones who were asking for a lift when it was cold and raining.

I guess after driving a Reliant robin for a few years you become immune to what people think of your car.

Not really, and I don't think any of my neighbours care what any neighbours think. It's a relatively small road but there are over a dozen Aston's and Ferrari's, quite a few Bentleys and an Aventador or my little road. There are also quite a few vans, company BMW's, knackered old Citroens, unwashed mercs and a graveyard of old beemers. We all rub along quite happily without any issues of jealousy or grandstanding.

Academic research typically shows people become miserable or less happy when a neighbour has better "stuff" than you. The theory of relative happiness. Bigger assets attract mates and status.

If the guy across the road has a perceived better car than you, chances are you will not be too happy about it (despite what you will or will not say).
Please give a source for this academic research because it's the biggest load of bks I've yet to read on the internet.

Ah but in that case the only judge that matters, of what is better, is you.

Many of my neighbours have newer and more expensive cars but none have a better car (in my eyes) than my Supercharged MX5.

None of you do either.

I don't care what my neighbours think about my car. I do care about my home, car and property/posessions being clean, tidy and well looked after.

Washing my own car gets me more gyp from the neighbours than anything else I do.

No due to house prices we live in a poorer part of town where a lot of people on my street are council.
Wonderful mental gymnastics.
It's a fact.
It's true in some parts of London. You get this weird bimodal distribution of residents where you are either needy / deprived enough to get a council flat, or you can afford to buy / rent one in the non-subsidised market. Your average London earner looking for a £2-400k place falls into neither category.
Whereabouts are you Downward?
West Midlands.

Average house price round here is £195k.

Not sure what such a 'high' wink average price says of the low end rental market.

Morning all,

I'm a bit of a serial car seller / buyer, no denying that.

Having just sold my e60 (£8k) to be replaced with a Mx5 (£2k) I was outside washing and tidying my new purchase. As is the way my neighbour's will often come out for a chat but his opening line this time was "business not doing well?!" And referencing the "downgrade".

Do people really judge like that and care what people / neighbour's think?
(Is start a poll thread but I don't know how!)
Anyone who knows anything about cars, even having not driven one (such as myself) knows of the reputation of an MX-5... So I wouldn't call it a downgrade at all.

But yeah, people do judge like that. However, I don't care what the neighbours say (to reference Led Zeppelin)!

My neighbour is a bit weird, I have an A3 which was my company lease car until I bought it outright. While under lease he's asked about it, (how much it was etc), and why I'd be washing it saying 'It's not even yours'. Now he's upgraded his C4 Picasso shed to a Zafira that's 6 months older than my A3, and likes to say things like 'time you got something newer don't you think?' The A3 is 4 years old and does less than 10k...

+1

I would imagine it is more nuanced than has said been above, for example if this person feels he has 'failed' in life or believes the system is unfair/neighbour is not worthy of the asset etc then those types of people will, more so as its on his doorstep and he faces it everyday. But without these underlying issues, most people won't be so bothered.

This reminds me of the argument that Facebook ultimately makes you unhappy because it's full of people apparently having a better time than you.
Of course it's an illusion.

I'm not too fussed what the neighbours think but that said they're not really car people so probably don't pay much attention to what's on my driveway.

The only comments I've had about my cars have been really positive. I tend to be outside cleaning them every other weekend so people comment as they walk past. Have had couple of middle aged guys stop for a chat and ask about the cars and chatted about what they drive etc.

Nope

Makes no difference if I have a new car in the drive or a shed. I had a 13 year old diesel Carisma with a dented bonnet, scraped bumper and dented passenger side door for 15 months, I have a brand new car again now... But when the lease expires I'll probably go back to a shed again for a period because I enjoy shedding.

I don't give a monkey's what anybody else thinks about what I drive has and don't judge anybody or care about what they drive, although if they have a car that tickles my interests or I really like it will usually go over and have a chat and admire their motor. I do also appreciate what they think if they come over and chat about cars etc and like my car too (if that makes sense)?

I suppose my response was what got me thinking about starting the thread.

I found myself justifying my reasoning but I don't actually care what he thinks.

Not at all. In any case, I like my neighbours, we cooperate very well, have keys to each others' houses in case of emergencies. I do not think it would even occur to them to worry about what I drive and the feeling is mutual.
