But why would you want to spend 90k on a defender? To pose in town, doesn't matter if it's 2wd on semi slicks.

If you actually will use the car off-road you buy a standard one, fit some big tyres, give it a 2-4" lift, fit a snorkel and bumpers with a winch.

That Defender is not exactly an Air Portable these days, but blimey the G-Wagen has scoffed a lot of pies.

Yeah, yeah. Johnny Two-Times has been fired from the subbing desk. I said Johnny Two-Times has- ... you get it.

Apologies, etc.

If I ever did, it certainly wouldn't have the 2.2 diesel.

The G is just superb. A G350d would be my ideal daily driver.

A Defender 110 with a V6 or V8 diesel and automatic gearbox would have been a hell of a good car. Shame that chance is gone
I drove a standard 2016 Diesel with the Ashcroft 4 speed auto conversion. It was lovely. I also drove a 90 manual with the upgrade to the ECU to 184bhp. Combine the Auto and with engine upgraded soundroofed 110 diesel with Twisted suspension and you have a surprisingly nice to drive Defender..

Land Rover should never have stopped building the Defender.

Also... It never got the engine and gearbox it deserved.

The 50th anniversary edition came closest.

I think most comments and the article itself pertaining to the capabiliteis of these vehicles are completely irrelevant and nonsense. As a road car with occasional light offroad use, both are rubbish and expensive compared to a vast myriad of alternatives.

As pure off roading machine, baring a tiny minority, no one will properly use a £60k+ vehicle offroad as intended for fear of damaging.

By virtue of their inflated costs, catering to markets, they are no longer suited to their raison detre - utilitarian vehicles!

I have a Defender 110, I use around the farm, it pulls tree stumps, trailers, it wades through rivers, deep mud, carries dirty people and dirtier dogs, heavy tools, drives through bushes, over ledges etc etc.

Would I do any of these things with a shiny chelsea chariot worth £60k+ ...... abso-fecking-lutely not!!

Valid point well made! And that's a PROPER Land Rover.

I have to ask though, is that foliage in the picture growing out of the bonnet? wink

I can see your point, but being a contrarian I would counter that they, or the articles are no more irrelevant than those espoused about the latest 200mph hypercar.

As an analogy I liken these types of vehicles to high-end, expensive diver/chronograph watches - robust and packed with features that the owner is unlikely to ever need, but crucially, nice to have and own.

Personally, I'm glad they exist. smile

When the G-Class was gaining popularity with the wealthy, that's when Land Rover should have launched an uber-posh version of the Defender. It could have had a Range Rover type of interior and a big V8 from BMW. I reckon it would have sold very well.

Anyone who spends £90k on a Defender needs their bumps felt. Quite happy spending time in my completely standard MY16 90XS for about a third of that. The value has appreciated too!
I had the pleasure of driving a Twisted T40 90. The improvements are very noticible and I genuinely didn't want to give it back! I am now plotting to convert a 110 to Auto and add he main parts of their conversion. Sound proofing, upgrade to engine and lovely suspension. The offset of the wheels really helps the turning circle too.

All this done will make the car into a very useable 7 seater. Wind noise is the only let down but I hope to work with them on this too. Perhaps different seals and strengthened door frames?
turn a £30K Defender XS base vehicle into a c. £90K machine - its £60K!!! Bloddy wants to ride a bit better!

This is what Land Rovers are designed for, not poncy £60k "upgrades". Each to his own I guess...
