Wasn't the original G Wagon a proper, working off roader like the Defender?
its a military vehicle, 3 locking diffs and a small footprint with square corners for optimal overview of the edges of the car to easier manouver the thing. used around the world for 40 years, its still the same car - a door from a 1979 army spec will fit a 2016 G65 AMG perfectly.
Dear PH,
If you go off roading around Scar House reservoir in a classic Range Rover, I'd love to have a ride.
My godfather used to farm those moors and when he switched from a Series III Land Rover to a 1975 Range Rover as his farm hack the difference bounding across the moors was a revelation that I still remember 35 years later. Sadly the price of the same model is now way out of reach for me. I can't imagine anyone using a FFRR for feeding the sheep these days!
Ps now off to classifieds to look at G wagens instead...

Good review Guys
From an owners point of view having had both defenders in modern form (one had some twisted bits on it) and a coupe of G wagens theres not really much comparison as said.
No way would I ever replace my G500 with a defender, nor would I ever want to own a defender again having had the G wagen. Miles apart on quality and refinement, plus still gets the job done with no fuss.
