There will be no fuel fed in when the wheels are driving the engine in a modern car (auto or manual). In neutral, a small amount of fuel would be used.
Except that in gear you're also getting engine braking, slowing you down faster than just coasting. Therefore it may well be balanced out by the increased rolling as you wouldn't need to be back on the accelerator until later. I noticed when I drove a new 320d ED auto now puts gearbox into neutral to coast downhill.
Thepeoplespal. Sadly, you and I are in a small minority that actually cares about the amount of fuel we use. Whatever your reason for caring about fuel consumption, (be it the cost, or the damage to the environment/our children, or the finite time the product will last - whatever the reason), it is a pleasure to read of someone with a like-minded attitude toward a natural resource that WILL eventually run out. Mainly because we are using it up at a faster and faster rate.

Averaging 62mph! Wow, thats going some. I drove 400 round trip to Kent last month, M3/M25 etc did it all at Warp8... ;-) Average for the whole trip was only 50mph and that was really pushing on.I must admit to doing it sometimes, I always beat the trip computer using a brim-to-brim measurement, Renault seems to underestimate fuel usage to the tune of 2-4mpg over a tank.
I once drove Dorset to York and back to colect an ebay purchase (it was a friggin bargain :-) cruised up slowly through rush hour traffic and slowly back in the dark and rain, averaged 66mpg from 1.9TD, mostly driving 65mph on the motorway, usually averages 52mpg at "normal" motorway speed. If I don't pay attention I normally get 49-50mpg.

Me too, I love to race the sat nav although it's never very magnanimous in defeat, doesn't even acknowledge it got it wrong.I do this when I have the wife and kids in the car.
For me, it's a game of fuel economy one-upmanship with myself.
As far as the wife is concerned, I am a careful, courteous and smooth driver.
Everyone's a winner!
Side note: I drive a supercharged Merc, so whenever I hit 30mpg+ whilst playing this game, I become inordinately happy.

I've a fairly regular 150mile trip on M40 and M25 and in an attempt to remain with a licence, I've started to compete against the average mpg computer reading, I try this by avoiding the average mpg reading from increasing while still maintaining a decent average speed for the whole journey.

Another one here, it's great having something to compete with. The only time I drive with any consideration to the mpg is when I'm almost out of fuel and nursing it to a petrol station.
The BMW gets somewhere around 18mpg in normal use on the trip computer. The Subaru seems to be quite economical in the mid to high 20s.

Averaging 50mph is pretty good in the UK generally. It's what I'd base ETA times on if planning long journeys. You do have to be going some to beat it though.The first time I went to Germany on a motorbike (unfaired Triumph Speed Triple) we averaged 78mph on the first day according to the satnav including the ride through Holland.

I do this too. I must admit I have managed to beat it by a very large margin. MPG was well sub 20.I found myself doing exactly this 'I'll arrive at 9.45, I'll show you, I bet I'm there before half past'

However I am not quite sure why my car does this, it clearly miscalculates some part of the A303 to be missing, or much slower than it really is. I don't know. It is a relatively new map update on the car as well, 2015 version.

Sitting at 75 to 80 leptons most of the time, while also getting 50+ mpg overall makes this Old duffer happy enough to be "sad". Don't think I could ever really do the hypermileing thing properly, but playing at beating a computer while maintaining a good average speed helps me keep interested in my regular journey.Predicted times on these things are pretty far off though, last night I was cycling on my way back from a pretty long bike ride with tired legs.

I had an indicated 80mpg after 25 miles of trundling down the M40 and M25. I was clearly on for a new personal best, but the whole thing was scuppered by a tailback on the A41. Back down to mid 60s mpg by the time I got home. Gutted.
It's too much effort to try this more than once or twice a month though, most of the time I just want to get home.
