I was on the M40 in the middle lane. I was in my Chimaera, outside me was a Cerbera V8. We were having a bit of a chat via handsignals. A Renault 5 almost sat on the bumper of the Cerb, this at a bit over 70mph, and flashed headlights.

Now I not suggesting this is the correct response, but:

The Cerb driver waved goodbye to me, dropped a gear or two, revved the engine (a delightful scream from the exhaust) and dropped the clutch. Clouds of smoke streamed from the rear tyres, leaving two black lines in the outside lane. The Cerb shot off into the distance.

The Renault driver must have thought that the Cerb driver had braked as she'd stamped on hers. To her, the Cerb must have seemed like it was rocket powered.

She came past a couple of minutes later staring straight ahead.

Be careful who you tailgate.
Wasn't me - mine flames with the right throttle application and revs. I find thats handy for tailgaters
That's interesting - I'll let Phil Jxxxxx know about that. He's always used wire coat hangers on tailgaters in the past! laugh

I'm 70. Please explain why I need to take a test.
Can we nominate 89 year old Father-in-laws. Not had an accident but seen hundreds. Scrape marks all over his car, drives at 20-30mph without too much anticipation.

He won't give up though, he's not ready, it'll take away his independence of me having to charge his car battery every weekend because of the 1 mile journey to the local shops

Some people are just ar$3holes. Got cut up at a mini roundabout a few weeks back - I raised my hands off my steering wheel as if to say "What are you doing?" and they moron driving just smiled and gave me the finger. There are so many idiots on the road.

There's a road I drive on most days going past Brands Hatch. The speed limit is 60mph, and there's a downhill stretch with a speed camera at the bottom of it.

Almost every day without fail the car I am following is doing roughly 60mph, and then brakes and slows to about 40mph past the camera.

If it's clear to do so (very long and wide bit of road) I usually overtake the car whilst continuing at 60mph.

The above happened about a year ago while following a new-shape Honda CR-V. The driver of the Honda (probably in his 30s) brakes to about 35mph past the camera, so I cruise past thinking nothing of it.

A few hundred yards down the road I see the CR-V in my mirror charging up behind me with lights flashing and lots of crazy arm movements from the driver. I just carried on driving and ignored him.

At the end of the road there is a roundabout followed by a dual-carriageway. He aggressively positioned himself to overtake me before we'd even exited the roundabout. His face when he couldn't quite make any progress on a smoky old diesel Peugeot was priceless!
I use this road every single day and this happens every single day, without fail, despite the large NSL signs around the area with the camera.
I go down that road quite a bit too - nice and wide there. Amazing how petty some people at the 'audaciousness' of being overtaken!
Well I live in ask which is just down the road there and got stopped by a police car after an overtake on that road only a month ago.

The conversation went something like.

Hi officer what did I do wrong?

You overtook a car while crossing the central reservation

But I'm allowed to do that as the box is surrounded with a broken white line

No your not

Yes I am

Okay I won't overtake there again.

At the new local petrol station/mini mart/greggs/costa thing there is a traditional petrol station layout of pumps, then about 10 parking bays in front of the shop, week before christmas, A4 and a E class cars entered the station and A4 parked up, the merc chap pulled in behind him, leapt out and was banging on the parked guys window shouting that was his space and he wanted A4 dude to get out of his car so they could resolve it.

This parking slight, resulted in them exchanging punches, well both windmilling wildly with the vain hope that one would land.
They both had wives and kids with them, and out of the 10 spaces there, 8 were available when they both pulled in.

I had a fight with a guy who decided to stop in the middle of the a38 exit road to use his mobile phone. I sat behind him for a while and eventually I had to get past him to go about my business, which involved joining a 70MPH A road for 2 meters in heavy traffic to get past him.

All I had done is sit there waiting, eventually he put his hazards on so when I went past him I shook my head at him. When I did that, he followed me, right to my destination, got out of his car and stormed up to me shouting "you fking ". Violence may or may not have happened at this point.

But more importantly since they made it a law that you can't use a phone whilst moving, why do plebs just stop in the middle of roads/roundabouts/departure lanes to use their phones? Do they not care about anyone else?

I know someone who had someone try and mug him on a forecourt whilst filling up his Landrover - he just pulled the nozzle out and soaked the bugger in diesel. The mugger being an idiot was more concerned that he could burn to death although he didn't hang around long enough for anyone see him start to melt.

I always worry about this one.

It's a Should Not rather than a Must Not so it's legal but not advisable.

I saw a Traffic Officer nick a chap for doing just this on one of the many TV Police Reality shows - on the grounds that he felt it was dangerous.

I like Yes or No answers not Maybe.

Thats Bizarre..can I share another bizarre occuarance that happened last week to me last week? (first person to say "cool starry bra" deduct 10 originality points)

Driving along the road I start to close on a car who is doing about 10mph less than the posted limit.. then the slow moving car puts its hazard lights on.. I think hmmm is the car in front breaking down? and so I stay hanging back ready for the car in front to expire.

Hazard lights go off and we carry on to the roundabout (slowly) ..nothing coming from the right but the car in front stops and I stop behind it, driver is gesticulating now...

Car in front pulls away...brakes hard on the roundabout for no reason and I'm stationary as I'm waiting for a car to pass from the right..

I carry on and catch back up with the car who is still doing 10mph less than the speed limit...leaving a big gap due to the car in fronts erratic driving... then the brake testing starts.. I ignore and keep my distance .... the car in front is now doing 10 mph...

I find a safe gap, overtake and carry on - car is now up my bumper...

So I stop in the middle of the road and get out.. walk over to the crazy car to be confronted with a white haired old lady in her 70's who is already head out of the window shouting "that was your fault! you were pushing me to break the speed limit"

Using as much self control as I can to remain polite I ask "are you crazy? I was nowhere near you and you are the one in control of your speed not me!"

She starts again with "that was your fault! you were pushing me to break the speed limit"

I explain to her that trying to brake test people wont end well for her , that I have the whole incident recorded on the camera if she wants to go to the police and that she should consider handing in her licence and letting a taxi do her driving for her as she's clearly un-fit to drive.

Walking back to my car i can still hear her yelling and tooting the horn I just got in my car and drove away

MENTAL!

You must have been driving round my way. Coming across people like this is daily occurrence. Scratch that. It's every time you get in the car. Stuck behind people who are driving way under limit whilst seemingly taking part in audition for the walking dead. Zombies oblivious to what's going on around them, completely distracted from the task of driving.

I'm starting to think I'm the one doing it wrong....Maybe I should be doing 35 in a 60 on a bright, dry, clear day, braking when other cars get near, braking for slight curves in the road and driving with my high beams on all the time.

It ruins my cadence of thought...I'm so used to processing what's going on in front of me at a certain pace (I.e. progressing at the posted limit if conditions allow)

It's a should not unless necessary and safe to do so. So it's legal either way and if you can't overtake without crossing the lines then it's necessary.

What, in legal terms, constitutes necessary ?

I don't think it's specified so I go by the dictionary definition. If I'm planning a legitimate move and I can't perform it safely without crossing the broken line then crossing the line is necessary. I'm not sure legal terms come into it anyway because it's not a 'must not'.

We have a steep hill on the A35 locally that has two lanes up and one down for about 1.5 miles. It provides the ideal opportunity for overtaking lorries and other slow stuff. Slap in the middle is a broken line, hatched junction with a turning on the right to a single property. The chances of anything turning right unobserved are zero but the number of people who abandon overtakes half way, wait for the end of the hatching and then resume are very high. I'm perfectly happy to carry on through the hatching if I'm already overtaking but would a random Police Officer decide that my actions are dangerous and ticket worthy ?

Do not overlook the fact that an NSL sign indicates the speed limit only to those people who actually KNOW what the NSL for their vehicle and that road actually is.

Many will just NOT know!
