I drove from Surrey to Melton Mowbray over the weekend on M1, then some A-roads ant then the A1. I've never seen so much litter and st everywhere. I thought the NW of England was bad, but some areas of Northamptonshire looked as bad as Lagos.

I don't remember the roads being so disgusting when I was a kid, and I'm not sure whether it's councils reprioritising their litter picking budgets for other stuff (like employee pensions and 'problem families') or British people being lazy, dirty, slovenly scum and not throwing their rubbish in bins or taking it home, but it's gross. I also suspect skip lorries and recycling trucks are also guilty of scattering mess everywhere.

We live on an increasingly overcrowded island. England has higher population density than Japan, yet the Japanese (and Taiwanese, Singaporeans etc) know that when space is limited we have to be extra responsible and clear up their mess.

It's embarrassing to think how many foreign people arrive in England and see our roadsides looking so third-world.

It wouldn't be that hard to set up some cameras in laybys and catch some of these rotters in the act, or even get community service people cleaning up the roads.

I have noticed this of late. even in the sparsely populated part of the country I live in (north wales border). I was told it is a health and safety thing as they now need to close off a lane to allow litter picking to be safe. Weather that is true or not I can't say. People just don't care is probably more like it. You often see stuff thrown out of car windows.

I agree. Horrible amounts. Given there doesn't seem to be money available for picking this up now, we should do more of the 'adopt a highway' schemes from the U.S.
Actually go out there and pick it up ourselves, and in publicising it on signs etc, make drivers realise it could be their neighbour who picks up their casually chucked sweet wrappers.

It's the same up here in north Wales.
I put it down to a lot of people being lazy mouth breathers.
I'd love to see more people being fined. And the fines being increased.
Councils are being squeezed for money. So the litter picking plays second fiddle to everything else.
A good idea would be to use low category prisoners to pick litter at the road side, then sort it into recyclable/non recyclable material. Then any money made goes into a fund for vouchers when they get out.

Problem up here in Scotland too. In the more upmarket areas, it seems to be a non-problem. As you get closer to the riff-raff areas, it's as if somebody has taken a few skips of rubbish and just dumped it all.

Say what you will, but it's always in the rougher parts it's worse.

People who throw litter from moving vehicles, should be punished by being thrown from a moving vehicle. It really is the most disgusting, lazy, inconsiderate habit. I'd hazard that the people who do it are probably the same people who'd moan about their taxes being too high when we need to pay people to go pick it up, too. Grumble grumble frown

Another thought. I hate it when councils mow verges without first picking up the litter. Just reveals it and spreads it around.

What I like is seeing how far away from a drivethru I can find macdonalds rubbish. Found some in Wales that was afaik good 50 miles or more from anywhere let alone a macdonalds.

A) It's winter, it shows up more.
B) Councils don't have the budget to litter-pick more than a couple of times a year.
C) Lots of people don't care about the environment.

People in orange jumpsuits with CONVICT written in large letters on the back should be picking it all up.
And the cop on the horse with the Ray-Bans and the shotgun isn't allowed to chew gum!

Given the quantity of litter that originates from McDonalds, perhaps they could be presented with a bill for cleaning it up - OR asked to print a unique code on each bag/cup/wrapper that they can track and relate to a bank card.. or something.

If we have to resort to volunteering and clean up the roads ourselves (which I would do) then we should be given the right to enforce some physical justice on any scratters caught in the act, and also request a reduction in council tax payments.

On an aside (and forgive me for sounding snobbish) I wonder how much of this litter plague is generated by the same plebs who's chaotic lives and lack of personal responsibility are hoovering up the council's cash that would have been spent clearing it up?

I have noticed this a lot recently, its shocking how much litter is on the grass verges, such a shame that people do not respect the countryside.

I've also noticed on the motorways seems to be a lot of tyre carcass, have never notice that until recently.

I was sat in a McDonalds car park and watched a scr*te in a blinged up Corsa eat a substantial meal in his car, who then proceeded to chuck every container, wrapper, cup, and paper knapkin that came with the meal straight out of the drivers side window onto the car park floor. Yet there was a waste bin all of 2 metres away from where he was parked.
What would have been poetic justice was the restaurant staff chucking the contents of the waste bin into the scr*tes car. Then he would have been at home as just a piece of rubbish in amongst even more rubbish.

Given the hoops you need to jump through at council tips these days just to dispose of some rubbish it's easy to see why it has increased.

The harder they make it to dispose lawfully, the more fly tipping will increase unfortunately.

The likes of Mc'ds & the drive away outlets should all print your reg number on the items.

Criminals should be given convictions in Tons of Rubbish collected.

But who does it?
Whenever this subject comes up, everyone says how awful it is, but nobody ever own up to actually doing the littering!

I was walking the other day following a group of 6 kids aged probably 12 or 13. One of them just dropped his coke bottle on the path when he'd finished it. I so very nearly picked it up and handed it back to him, but they were loud brainless gobshytes so thought better of it. I'm still annoyed with myself for not doing it though.

Number plate printing is a good idea, or at least some kind of ANPR that relates to a code on the packaging.

Faster biodegrading packaging would also help.

I blame the parents, but it is likely that they would be just as bad, but it really is worse than animal behavior. If a dog, cat, or any other animal found discarded food, one might expect `them' to eat the food, and leave the wrapper/container it came in behind, but for (so called) humans to do it, is just plain disgusting.

Never seen it as bad, really annoys me so instead of getting annoyed whilst walking the hound I pick it up on my route, at least my bit is clean !

I think at the moment, you can slightly mitigate it as the light is back with us after winter, but stuff hasnt grown yet to cover the rubbish, also with all the wind a lot of bins have been knocked over spilling stuff everywhere, however most of it is just utter peasants eating and drinking crap and launching it where they finish it.

I dont think it is actually that many people as a percentage, if everyone did it we would be up to our eyeballs in it, so it is just a smaller percentage of stbags who need killing biggrin

Probably the same people that go on about how "proud" they are to be British, well bloody show it you slovenly, st eating half wit.

Costa Coffee, loads of them, everywhere
McDonalds, usually a full sack lovingly dumped into a layby in a country lane.
Red Bull, loads of Red Bull compared to anything else, you would think they would ahve the energy to find a bin ?
Fag Packets, Sorry smokers but you seem to be a bit poor in this regard.
Lucozade, similar to RedBull, it isnt energy that is you need but there isnt a drink to stop you being a !
Beer Cans and bottles, there is someone who has a can of Fosters every night and drops it on the single track lane I ride back from work on, almost every day, want to meet him and say stop dropping it and buy some decent beer, probably a local alcy hiding his boozing whilst he walks the dog or something.

I think its kids dont get educated about this, not in the home and at school they are force feeding them loads of stuff about stuff they will never use but they dont seem to go in for stuff like this as Ofsted arent interested.

I think there is too much packaging now, more people can get more stuff on the go, there are very few penalties and all the crap you can gorge your fat face on for not much money.

Totally agree ont he being throw from a moving car thing, whoever does that is beyond hope as a human
