So much litter on the verges!...
Discussion
^^ Those who don't care about or the value of anything. Vast majority of people on PH are here because we all care about a particular thing, cars, even if we can't afford our dream cars, and that in itself probably selects a subgroup who are more likely to care about other things such as their environment and therefore don't litter etc. Hence the majority on here will be doing the asking about the cause of the littering rather than littering themselves.
ETA damn, too slow on the phone on a train. This was for Dr DS.

I think it's as much as anything else down to the stupid recycling boxes for plastics, paper etc, people put them out, the wind gets up before the binmen get there and the boxes and their contents are blown all over the place.
Seen it happen more times than I can I remember in my rural and otherwise generally litter free area in recent years.

But who does it?
Whenever this subject comes up, everyone says how awful it is, but nobody ever own up to actually doing the littering!
Judging by the type of litter seen on the roadsides, the majority is fast food packaging, coffee cups and tied-up carrier bags filled with nappies and other rubbish. So I'm going to blame millennial oiks, low-level travelling salesmen, builders and chavvy familiesWhenever this subject comes up, everyone says how awful it is, but nobody ever own up to actually doing the littering!

Number plate printing is a good idea, or at least some kind of ANPR that relates to a code on the packaging.
Faster biodegrading packaging would also help.
As a lot (but perhaps[s not all) of the rubbish in question is from vehicles which use the drive through option, number plating on the wrappers/ containers would allow discarded rubbish to be traced back to a specific vehicle. Faster biodegrading packaging would also help.
If it were made completely clear with big signs at the outlets, that this was being done, and some high profile prosecutions used for the perpetrators, it `might' make some of them think twice before chucking rubbish out of their vehicles. but I probably wouldn't hold my breath on this being the case.

The areas it seems to be the worst are miles from any housing though...Littering just makes no sense to me whatsoever. There is just no excuse.
I used to think that there must be an army of scum around to be able to chuck enough litter on the Dual Carriageway near us but the other month I was following the bin lorry and it was spewing crap out of the back as it drove along.
It did make me think that perhaps me attributing all the litter directly to people was a tad incorrect.

We get a lot of coffee cups (Costa usually) down our lane....its a single track with 4 houses, the other 3 either retired or work in the smoke - yet every week we end up collecting a carrier bag of rubbish from the verges...never caught who does it, but assuming its people using the lane as a cut through.
Had a poetic moment a month ago - stuck in traffic in the town centre...2 cars ahead a moron decides to chuck a used tissue out of his 1 series window...I jumped out, ran over to him and shoved it back through his still open window. The guy had a suit on, shirts hanging up in the back etc etc - its not a class thing, its a tt thing I have decided.

You should have videoed it and made the council go back and clear it all upIt did make me think that perhaps me attributing all the litter directly to people was a tad incorrect.
It's not the councils fault for not picking it up, nor is is fast food retailers fault for selling it, the fault lies with the people that drop it.
On the fly tipping front, I've reported flt tipping giving exact time and date, grid reference of where it was to 6 decimal places, accurate description of vehicle, number plate, who's it was and where it was parked. Essex police could do anything. My response was that they should check everything about that vehicle and company , it belong to pikies and they have a different trading name this year, and do them for lack of waster transfer license, O license, tacho offences etc. Police bloke when a bit quite then. Successful prosecutions should be vehicle crushed, a fine which is 10x that of deposing of what ever they were dumping legally and the same fine for who ever the rubbish belonged to.
Litter is an attitude issue, people don't care. A few high profile hammerings of offenders would help, but it needs to be seen as socially unacceptable to drop litter.

Yes, twice in the past year I have followed a recycling lorry spewing litter out all over the A331/A31, and seen it numerous times in the past. Likewise I have seen it drive down my road with bits dropping out the back. (Possibly the rule of waste operative engineers needing to ride in the cab means they can't see when that happens anymore)It did make me think that perhaps me attributing all the litter directly to people was a tad incorrect.
It seems to correlate with poor people, yesterday I had the pleasure of driving though grangetown in Cardiff, one of the poorer areas and witnessed a man take the lid off his takeaway he was eating while walking his child home from school, then throw the lid over the side of a bridge to the road below, about 5 mins later when he had scoffed the grim looking chips and curry sauce he screwed up the paper and threw it on all the floor. These people can't even look after where they live so god help anywhere else

Good idea in theory, but completely ineffective in practice. You just know the scrotes would tear off the bits of packaging with identifiers on and lob the rest out the window. Faster biodegrading packaging would also help.
