Well, it's not a retractable convertible is it. It's a rectractable Targa. And it looks like a guppy, so NO from me.

Question for Matt...

When driving one of these, is it obligatory to have that badger sitting on your shoulders, or were you just showing off?
Hello! Wasn't Matt, t'was me. And it was ruddy freezing when we shot it so, yes, it was! It was that or a sheep, the Dartmoor ones seemingly fairly determined to transform themselves into jackets at any given opportunity. Wish I'd had that jacket the other week when I was out in the Caterham too. Brrr.

Cheers!

Dan
I've had a few near misses up there, those sheep are suicidal.

The soft top looks like a silly facsmile of a cartoon. This looks even worse, if that is at all possible. Proportions all wrong.

Nasty.

Wow. So many haters for a pretty little car. And Mazda don't call it a convertible. They call it a Retractable Fastback (okay...it's a silly name too).

Sorry, I get confused. I'm old, you know. Are those ewes, you know...friendly?
I'm the one who likes MX-5s, Matt's more of a GT86 man.

And I'm not sure if the Dartmoor ewes are friendly. Belligerent/suicidal/stupid for sure, even by sheep standards!

Why do people keep saying it's a targa? The rear window goes down...
Anyway, I think it's bloody stunning. Looks much better than the soft top with the top up, but worse with the roof retracted. Though it will be better at hiding bald spots with the roof down and bald spots are an all too common blemish on most convertibles I see in the wild smile

This car really does divide opinion doesn't it.

I think it looks great.

When i first sw it...i thought "i'd sooner have that over the soft top"...but having gotten more used to it....the soft top is the more clean design.

Hmm.. dunno.

Both very good looking cars though!

I wonder if the Fiat version with its longer overhangs will make the roof profile look lower?

Fiat version (if it happens) won't be an RF, it will be a fixed coupe. Mazda have stated that the RF is "Mazda only".

Praise the lord, this must be one of the few new cars that isn't burdened with turbo crap, zf gearbox rubbish, it even still has a fully manual (left arm workout by today's lazy drive standards) handbrake. Will it work to provide simple handbrake turn pleasures like the ones used to impress impressionable girls when we started our driving careers. This could well be the MR2's replacement in my fleet when they are about 10 years old and selling for £2000-£3000. Great stuff Mazda.

Got to have a look at one of these in the middle of a shopping centre the other day. Looked decent enough, maybe a little out of proportion at the back.

A nice alternative to the hardtop of the past and I imagine it will do a good job as a "sporty daily."

The previous hardtop version was no doubt convenient but it was no beauty & this is a just a clumsy truncated effort with a roof line that is FAR too high. Maybe Mazda had images of an elderly Rover driver wanting to wear his trilby when driving.
The dreary depressing Eastern Bloc tarmac grey colour is so unsuited to what is supposed to be a fun frivolous machine for youngsters.
After the first 2 versions of the MX-5 Mazda began to lose its way & perhaps the concept has had its day or are there other variations in the pipeline, a hatch-back perhaps or a 4 x4 for mummies yet able to afford an Evoque convertible?

I went to see it at Lancaster's in Brum. I thought it was more attractive in the flesh than the photo's I'd seen of it.
Sadly the salesman was uninterested in showing me the car but demanded to see the photo's I'd taken and asked what I intended to do with them.

Looks odd. Better with roof up but roof not particularly neat. Blacked out rear side windows look wrong, especially with the roof off...

Etc.
