This will be another dull version of this already dull car. Sure it has lots of horsepower, 4-wheel drive and can beat most cars in the traffic light grand prix. but it sounds rubbish, totally un-engaging, lacks any drama (other than acceleration), terrible interior, and looks boring. Am surprised they haven't also increased it to 8 exhaust pipes across the back just to increase the chavness appeal. It's just a chav car for grown up chavs with kids that require baby seats.

yes, I'll get insulted, abused, and flamed now for having this opinion but I don't care. People will now likely go back through my profile, to try to look at my car and comment history so that they can say reply with lame things like "well you drive a ford mondeo, do you sell double glazing?" or "wow, that's a strong opinion from someone that's had 3 Reliant Robins. Your opinion is worthless". That's the sorry state of PH these days.

I had a Golf GTI and bought a Golf R thinking it would be a great car. I found it a total waste of money as it was boring in every respect and the GTI was so much better. I went back to the GTI before eventually switching to something else.

And to answer the usual question that'll appear because some moron will assume I just couldn't afford the Golf R and that was the real reason for changing it: I bought the Golf R, didn't lease it.

Love it! And I also love the fact that this piece of poetry has gone largely unnoticed!!!

Golf..... they peaked with the Mark 1 GTi 1800 back in 1980, since then, boring "blue rinse old lady cars. So much better out there for less money.
No they didnt, I have had two of those and they were ground breaking, however they also had crap brakes, crap headlights, zero in the way of kit etc etc, I guarantee an R is more fun to drive than a 112 bhp mk1.

Its old, must be fantastic, thats how religions start, its just nostalgia and maybe a smidge of rawness but really ?

Anyway, the 1800 didnt arrive until 1983, 1980 models were still 1600 cc 4 speeders with the early small lights if I remember correctly.
I had a Y reg 1800 and yes Y was 1982-1983.

TX.
Yes, was 1982 it changed over, there is a mix of 1.6/1.8's in 83 one of mine was a Y reg, but that had a 1900 GTI Engineering lump in it, about 130 bhp, seemed quite quick for the time but not a great example. best one I had was a 5 speed Mk1, that was an 82 X.

My bet the bhp just below the RS3.

Why can;t they stop pussy footing about make a 500 bhp uber golf and gain some respect. probably would cost 60k but would be awesome. could be tuned by Porsche and have a sticker on the back.

no in homage to the SEAT IBIZA Porsche.

A porsche tuned Golf would stick it to Audi though.

(i am sure it came with a sticker on the back window as well but can't find an image)

Hopefully a reborn R400
http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/about-us/futures/r400

I'd love to see a stealth car, like the 80's Golf Limited:
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=golf+limited&amp...

I'd like:

- 4 door
- Subtle; single pipe exit (happy with titanium or s/s or Inconel)
- Wheels that look like bogo steels but are forged alloy or forged magnesium
- No outward wings or
- 4WD
- 400 bhp
- Carbon bonnet and tailgate and roof. Other panels alloy where possible; ideally all.
- Wet weight (no person) as close to 1.330kg as possible ( i.e. 300 bhp/ton wink )

Alex

Almost certainly this'll just be the normal facelifted Golf R however now it'll be available with options including, for example, a titanium exhaust system, sticky tyres etc.

Looking at the configurator, I see that the estate R now allows a towbar to be fitted. The hatchback doesn't specify it. This is a major decision factor for a middle aged man considering buying what is essentially still a boy racer's car. Subtle paintwork, wheels and towbar + performance ++++ and I'm there... Anyone listening VW?

I'll get me coat...
So get the estate. Estates are cool.
Indeed - I have driven the Mk7 R estate and was impressed (arguably better to drive than the hatchback). Lets see if the new performance version has a towbar option, nestling in between that Akrapovic exhaust. It can be done; Hello - who's she? its a MK5 R32...

Probably cheaper to buy a normal R and then fit better brakes and have it remapped and fit better suspension (if you want).

Seems pointless, and that yellow is horrific, like that BMW baby sick yellow they did on the E46 M3s.
I like the yellow, the Golf though i'll pass. They should bring out a 500HP version, that would be even better.

then some nark would still come along and ask when the "full fat 650bhp version is due out".
the only good to come from this will be watching Traffic Cops or Road Wars etc in a few years seeing toe rags bombing around in these motors (in the same company as the Seat Leon 290 and Audi S3 ) with the fuzz trying to catch up.....
probably around Bradford somewhere.

Still fitting those calipers made from pig iron with a big single piston I notice.
It really ticks me off that Seat can get the Brembo option but VW seem reluctant/unable to get serious with the brakes.
Poor show on that front.

Branding vs substance.

Similar for 'engineered by Porsche'. The Golf Clubsport S and I seem to remember reading somewhere even the Golf R development team had Porsche engineers on board. Especially the former is supposedly very well set-up. 'But it is stil a Golf', yes and apparently that brand is strong enough to go cheap on brake calipers, skipping the actual Porsche connection and putting up high list prices, only to almost give R's away in lease instead.

The engine is terribly bland, especially for one that sits at 300bhp, up to 400 when maxing out the turbo. Or incredibly refined for the power level, depending on your perspective. I had the former perspective at first, but with daily driving it and having a very discreet but subtly sonourous aftermarket silencer on the othewise near silent estate exhaust set-up (mostly shared by the R SW and Cupra ST, and by extension the Octavia Estate vRS), I have really grown to like the engine's subtlety. Oh and don't have all that silly crackle and pop and switched off that fake speaker too. All pretend...

A bit embarrassing indeed when even a cheapo £25k new M140i (after discount) has the 4 pot Brembos as std. But I am not sure many of those Golfs are going to get tracked so it doesn't really matter functionally.

I'm liking that new paint. It reminds me of BMW's Austin Yellow on the new M3/M4. I think the VW range do need to bring out some nice bespoke colours for their performance cars and stop being so boring and typically German.

I've not got much else to say tbh. I love the Golf R and i don't feel it needs any more power and anything daft doing to it. It's pretty perfect in the standard MK7 guise to me. This facelift is okay but it's all about the numbers these days.
