200mph+ for less?
Discussion
Inspired by the 5% Pocket Exotic thread and the fact that I've just bought an SL55 - I wondered how little you need to spend to top 200mph+ in a production car?
I'm not talking about a Ford Escort with a Rover V8 running on nitrous, but a standard production car.
An SL55 can be had for about £12k, and a pint to the right man can get the 155mph limit removed, to top out at 202 or 207mph depending on who you believe (it could be argued that isn't standard anymore).
What do you need to spend to get into the 200mph+ club?
Utterly pointless, of course, unless you live in Germany.

I think you need to have plenty of disposable pension, be a midget and lodge yourself firmly up a local tuners bumhole to achieve the necessary powerI'm not talking about a Ford Escort with a Rover V8 running on nitrous, but a standard production car.

Fifth Gear did a feature on this a while ago, you may be able to find it online somewhere. The budget was £20k and they ended up buying a Lotus Esprit V8, which promptly had its gearbox fall apart 20 minutes after they bought it! I can't remember if they achieved 200mph or not. I should imagine it'd be a horrendously expensive thing to do though, and one of the worst enjoyment to cost ratios possible in motoring!

I reckon you could do it for £10k, leggy e55 amg, remap, decat and a limiter removal. Should do 200?

Seems £12k or less will do it in the OPs SL55 but I agree on your enjoyment / cost view. There's probably a fair few cars out there that could top it without you spending too much to buy it. Running it may of course be a different story haha.
I have a CLS63 and have seen a few Youtube clips of these with the limiters removed, capable of going over 190mph. So as standard that's a 510bhp engine in a large car. I suspect a re-map and limiter removal could see you tipping 200mph and you can pick an average mile example for sub £15k. That goes for a fair few AMGs with either the 5.5 super charged engine (SL/CLS/E55) or the 6.2 V8 in the 63 models.
I've no doubt this applies to some of the BMW or Audis as well although not cars I've experienced.

They broke a gearbox, then an engine, then fitted nitrous. I think they did about 175mph.They tried at Bruntingthorpe, which isn't exactly a big place (as in, long track) for a 200mph run.
Probably their legal team advised not televising a 200mph attempt in Germany on public roads which is more dangerous but ultimately a longer straight bit of road.

Way over budget but bitd 2 Escort Cosworth owners got to around 200 but had to have 6-700 BHP to get there.
And do the attempts with big rear wing removed.
Not sure they did?And do the attempts with big rear wing removed.
Martin Hadland did it in the Reyland Escort 2, Angry midget did it in his saph, not sure if Andrew Gallagher managed it in his Focus
I'm not sure another Escort has done it?
