Twin Turbo a Monaro and it can go 208mph at VMax even with 3 passengers.

I know they are still very quick, even by today's mental standards. However, Mercedes figures vary from 'only' around 480 bhp, to later cars that are said to have around 520 bhp. How come they are so quick (especially so, considering they weigh nearly two tonnes). Is it gearing? Or are the quoted power figures very pessimistic?

Weight has nothing to do with top speed.
Cheers for posting back - embarrassingly, I didn't know that - this thread has been a TIL on a number of different points for me! idea

200mph?! I've driven at a GPS verified 158mph (Marham) and it scared me silly. You do not want to get up to 200mph in an "old banger"!

An SL55 can be had for about £12k, and a pint to the right man can get the 155mph limit removed, to top out at 202 or 207mph depending on who you believe (it could be argued that isn't standard anymore).

They have a lot of torque, from very low in the rev range, > 500 lb/ft, that is why they feel quick, that and 500 bhp, plus very tunable for more.
I think you're right about the torque. My Father has an F10 Alpina D5 and, although it's not the quickest car (relative to all fast cars), it feels like an absolute monster because it has so much torque from tickover. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the quoted torque figure of 516 ft-lb wasn't very reserved.

I've seen a couple of videos of D5s at 300 kph, but I think they'd probably need more power to get any further.
