Probably been asked thousands of times on here but why are Phaetons so cheap? Do they suffer with catastrophic failures costing thousands? Quick look on eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/302246365928
Just baffles me why you don't see them everywhere

Most big cars cost a lot to run and depreciate a fair bit. The Phaeton somehow was never as popular as the usual S Class, A8 or 7 series that most people bought instead. I think that's about it really.

Maybe non car folk look at it & just see a Passat with an engine that isn't a 2.0tdi & so move on?.

Well kind of, there's a cheaper one 2012 with 195k miles just think dealers want rid of them maybe? Surely you have to be sniffing glue to buy one new

In purely financial terms you do to buy any car in this class. A broadly similar seven series wont be worth a great deal more.

The sort of people who buy one new wouldn't be seen dead in a 10 year old one.

Sensible people would suck their teeth and wonder how much tyres would cost.

Even the daftest chav wanna impress the birds type would realise that he is taking on too much, and anyway the birds wouldn't be impressed with a big passat.

The only people who would buy something like that is an enthusiast who uses the word "barge" as a term of endearment. A pretty rarefied group even on here. I'd quite fancy a W12 or the V10 diesel, but the smaller engines don't do a lot for me.

Really? It's a complex, bland saloon that has very little prestige.

They weren't very attractive to buyers new, so not that many available second-hand.

They're really not seen as that desirable.

A lot of motor for the money if none of the above is important to you.

Prestige car without the prestige.

Could it be the running costs and the total lack of image that puts people off?

As said, buying one new would have been utterly mental. When you look at the price and depreciation let alone other cars you can get for that kind of money.

To someone in the know, these are a bargain and that W12 engine is something a bit special. To the rest of the general public who don't have a clue, this is just a VW with an 'expensive' engine which probably puts people off.

Because it looks like a Passat that has eaten a few too many pies and has running costs comparable to an S Class.

At the end of the day, it's a VW. Even an old 7 series has a little cachet at the end of the day.

It's a 9 year old car...so the price is about right.
A lot of car for your money...better just hope it's a good'un though.
If I wanted a luxo-barge, I'd be buying a Lexus. Almost guaranteed not to go wrong, unlike a Volkswagen.

I bought my 2008 5.5 litre Merc CLS with 110,000 on 17 months ago for £7000, that is just how cheap barge type cars get as they age.

You have to put up with inferior fuel economy (though this wont be that bad) and the chance of getting some very big bills, can be mitigated with doing your own work, for example I am changing a leaking Crank Case vent thing at the weekend as mine is leaking oil onto the exhaust, £16.09 the part cost, take that in and say "it smells of burning oil, please fix it" and you will probably get hammered.

That is a hell of a lot of car for five and a bit grand.

I would avoid the W12 and V10, very risky if anything goes wrong, this one being a 3.0 TDI it may not be quite a wallet terror like the other engines.

Does being on a private plate mess up the history timeline?

I think the Audi A8 is probably the main reason. The A8 is lighter, faster, more economical, nicer inside, better looking and for those that care has the more expensive badge. I like the look of the Phaeton but if I want a full size AWD luxobarge Audi have more desirable options available.

Well the mileage has gone up so it's not been laid up. I would've said it's been registered over on Isle of Man or similar

Isn't the suspension a weak and very expensive common failure, £1000+ a corner iirc.
