VW Phaeton why so cheap?!?!

I would avoid the W12 and V10, very risky if anything goes wrong, this one being a 3.0 TDI it may not be quite a wallet terror like the other engines.
Maybe that's the Phaeton's problem, lots of choice in the 3 litre diesel saloon end of the luxury market and the bigger engines are a tad scary to run.snobetter said:
Isn't the suspension a weak and very expensive common failure, £1000+ a corner iirc.
Doesnt look that bad, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/For-Bentley-Continental-...L0AAOSwo4pYhaGX
Is that it or is it other problems ?

They're a cheap way into a Bentley without paying for the badge.
But it isnt, they share some aspects of a platform, but it is a different interior, sheetmental, wheels etc.As for a big Passat, yep but this or an actual Passat ? a Passat 2.0 Tdi of the same age/mileage is pretty much in the same price range and you get 4wd , much nicer interior, more power and an all round more expensive car, potentially migth not cost any more to run than a Passat of the period, lad at work had one and it was always having some work.

Probably been asked thousands of times on here but why are Phaetons so cheap? Do they suffer with catastrophic failures costing thousands? Quick look on eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/302246365928
Just baffles me why you don't see them everywhere
Well that one is slow (so rules out many buyers). It costs a fortune to tax (ruling out more buyers) - £500/year.Just baffles me why you don't see them everywhere
It uses a lot of fuel (29.4mpg) and said fuel is diesel (ruling out even more buyers).
It looks like it hasn't been service properly - only six stamps?
The styling is bland and the badge (Volkswagen) blander.
The miles are not exactly low (120,000).
It's missing some options (keyless entry, power boot, memory seats, heated steering wheel), though it does have massaging rear seats (great for a chauffeur, but it seems like a poor choice for that in 2017!? Useless for anyone else)
This A8 http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017... is £480 more but the VED is £200/year less, so that quickly balances out, and regardless it should always be worth more than simply because it's not a Volkswagen.
So the question is not why are Phaetons cheap - they aren't, no more than A8s, S-classes, etc - but why are barges in general so cheap, and the answer to that is supremely simple - (a) they cost (a lot) more to run than a Ford Fiesta 1.0 (b) for people who want a luxury vehicle, they (mostly) want a new one, and not a naff 10-year-old car with 'live TV' or whatever other anachronistic technology you find in 2007 vehicles.
I've been running a V10 diesel for coming up for four years now, they are superb long distance vehicles although they can have the occasional expensive hiccup.
If you go over the the VW Vortex forum you can ask actual owners their opinions. Some of these cars do starship mileages without a single hiccup. So far in my ownership I've had to replace the power steering high-pressure pipes at £500 by using a good mechanic that saved me a fortune by avoiding main dealers.
Try one if you gel with it you will love it, it has cooling massage seats(spec dependant) double glazing, superb standard sound system.
I bought mine as a University Taxi when my daughter was at Norwich, the 400 mile round trip was like a trip down the shops and for a 5 litre V10 diesel I got near 39 MPG.
The four zone A/C plus the individual heated or cooled seats meant that each of my very fussy passengers left me in peace to enjoy the drive.
It's a real Q car too and you can leave it anywhere and it doesn't get vandalised. I'd like a W12 one next but each time a late 2010 W12 comes up it sells in about three days, so someone somewhere knows something for such a car to sell that quickly.

As with Birma above I own one of these too, albeit 'only' the 3.0 TDI.
I wouldn't say they're particularly cheap, not much less than the equivalent S Class, 7 Series, A8, etc, but I chose a Phaeton instead just because it's more interesting to me, it's something that you don't see everyday.
They're certainly strange cars, as others have said they can be big, thirsty, heavy expensive cars waiting to go wrong, but I wouldn't swap mine for the world. The folks on VW Vortex certainly know their stuff and are willing to help people, if you are interested in getting into one.
If you're not too interested in badge snobbery they're a great car if you buy well. In 18 months and 30,000 miles I've had one sensor go which cost about £200 all in at my local specialist, dread to think what it would have cost at the dealers! For doing big mileages they're fantastic, you can literally whisper at 80mph and even after 5-6 hour drives I still feel fresh. And whilst some would criticise the bland styling, I find them quite handsome and don't have to worry about them sticking out. I've left mine parked up on the street in the middle of Glasgow one weekend and wasn't worried about it in the same way I think I would be a 7 series for example, most people just wouldn't even notice it. If you like the look of them and aren't too concerned about 'only' having a VW badge I can't think of a better car for doing big distances for the money, interior is bang on too! Horses for courses though I suppose, whilst I love mine there will be 1000 people who wouldn't entertain one.

The sort of people who buy one new wouldn't be seen dead in a 10 year old one.
Sensible people would suck their teeth and wonder how much tyres would cost.
Even the daftest chav wanna impress the birds type would realise that he is taking on too much, and anyway the birds wouldn't be impressed with a big passat.
The only people who would buy something like that is an enthusiast who uses the word "barge" as a term of endearment. A pretty rarefied group even on here. I'd quite fancy a W12 or the V10 diesel, but the smaller engines don't do a lot for me.
I'd have a Phaeton in a heartbeat. Don't really mind which engine, I'd even be happy with the front wheel drive one (after all, it's hardly supposed to light the road up). The reason I don't have one is, well, I don't know really...Sensible people would suck their teeth and wonder how much tyres would cost.
