VW Phaeton why so cheap?!?!
Discussion
Are they particularly cheap? A Jaguar XJ of similar vintage are about the same.
I quite like the interior in top spec versions and it would have to be the W12 petrol or V10 TDI remapped & exhaust to a crazy torque monster.

The sort of people who buy one new wouldn't be seen dead in a 10 year old one.
Sensible people would suck their teeth and wonder how much tyres would cost.
Even the daftest chav wanna impress the birds type would realise that he is taking on too much, and anyway the birds wouldn't be impressed with a big passat.
The only people who would buy something like that is an enthusiast who uses the word "barge" as a term of endearment. A pretty rarefied group even on here. I'd quite fancy a W12 or the V10 diesel, but the smaller engines don't do a lot for me.
Saved my typing pretty much the same thing.Sensible people would suck their teeth and wonder how much tyres would cost.

The V8 petrol is a perfectly good engine as is the 3.0 TDI. As for looks, they're not everything.
Good luck finding one though!A quick autotrader browse has 41 diesels and 1 petrol (V6) listed.

Here's part of my reply to an earlier thread on the Phaeton here on Pistonheads a few years ago:-

You should see the back seats in my 4 seater LWB model, heated and cooled seats that also hove massage function and individual air-con controls.
I possibly have the two most awkward passengers in my wife and daughter and they have never complained to date, much to my relief.
Birma, What's it like running this car without a warranty?
Potential ruinous bills?
I know about the TPMS sensors, the suspension issues which I learnt you have to change all 4 at once on earlier models?
I'm hoping the 3.2 will be a little easier on the wallet for running costs and general wear and tear of engine parts.
My reply:-
Like all Luxo barges you take a gamble, my thinking was after looking at £30K plus cars like Cayenne Turbo etc the Phaeton for £10K seemed a bargain. My plan was to hopefully run it for 4-5 years without a major problem then literally throw it away. If anything major were to go wrong I was of the opinion my gamble went tits up, end of story.
Having now run it for 2 plus years the only thing that has gone wrong were the PAS pipes which thanks to a good independent cost me £500.
Over time I have grown to really like the car, you can leave it parked anywhere, it makes a 400 mile round trip seem like a pop to the shops.
Every time I get in it I say 'hello old friend' in two or three years time I won't need it for the taxi run so I'll either replace it with a W12 or a 2013 Nissan GT-R.
In conclusion they are a gamble, don't buy one if you have a very tight budget unless you are handy with tools but I think a lot of things that can go wrong can potentially be ruinous.
And I stand by what I said at the time, this type of car is not suited to everyone and if you don't have a decent repair budget saved or can afford to throw it away if something major or sometimes minor goes wrong then don't even consider one.
I classify mine as a Power Luxo Barge and I'm fully aware that there can be potentially enormous bills for things like a water pump replacement etc but it doesn't stand in the way of really enjoying the car. The big problem is finding something that comes up to my expectations after owning a Phaeton. So far a 2014 Nissan GTr is favourite along with a Mercedes CL63 but who knows.

I owned a V8 from 2012 to 2014, fantastic car - one of only 18 on the road in the UK at the time.
When I bought it I was also looking at 2006 S-classes (new shape) but they were all around £12k. I paid just £7400 for my 2007 Phaeton from a private seller - 60% of what an S-class would have cost me. Similarly spec'd Audi A8's were also around £11k.
Had no major bills during my two years before I sold it for £6500 .... £900 for wafting around in a fantastic car for two years.
The only disappointing thing was the Galvanic corrosion and VW's inability to correct it. Soon after I bought the car VW agreed to treat and respray all four doors as bubbles of corrosion were appearing under the paintwork (this cost VW £3500) Just a year later one door had small bubbles appearing again, and the boot lid needed attention. Again VW were very good with the warranty and repaired the corrosion (cost them £2500 this time) A total of £6k in paintwork repairs, and through the Vortex forum mentioned above it appears my old car needs more paintwork.
The Vortex forum is one of the best I've been involved with, so many knowledgeable owners sharing information.
They may not be to everyone's taste but I loved wafting around with no one noticing the 'big silver Passat' !

Isn't the current Bentley Continental GT (the facelifted 2011- model) still based on this platform?
I think the only difference are the engines although the W12 in the Bentley is turbocharged. I had a good look over a 2006 Bentley Flying Spur and all of the cockpit controls are the same they are just more expensively made for the Bentley.Sa Calobra said:

The Honda Legend can be seen in the same light. A league ahead of the Accord but people still see the accord when considering them.
Looking at those this week. I love the Phaeton's looks and I hate vws usually.J4CKO said:
Kind of like having Le Coq Sportif or Dunlop trainers as a kid when all your mates have Adidas, Nike or Reebok, its the luxo barge your mum would buy you if she took it upon herself to buy one, nothing wrong with it per se, it just isnt one of the others.
That would be a luxury Kia or hyundia.Even a luxury Toyota is Uber cool.

we are from the same part of the world, there was a definite 'i don't give a st' attitude with trainers like that.Ditto 'adidas four stripe' from the market.
But the brand of choice for that was always Bukta. For the thinking Manc about town who wanted you to know that he didn't give a flying bejesus about what you thought of his choice of leisure wear.
Not sure how this relates to the VW Phaeton really, I can't find a link.
