Hi all,

Recently sold my Cayman GT4 which I absolutely loved but fancied a step up to something more exotic and quicker. With the likelihood of not being able to get the new GT3.2 because I need to have bought 2 Macans, 2 Panamaeras and 2 Cayennes I'm now looking at other brands, in particular McLaren.

Few questions;

1) Has anyone moved from a GT3 to 570s, pros/cons ?
2) Would anyone still consider going for a Gen 1 GT3 ?
3) Whats the McLaren ownership experience like ?
4) What's the current lead / delivery time for a new 570s if I ordered now ?

Cheers

I am in a similar position and while I can't help you with 1-3 I'm just back from my local McLaren centre and they are quoting a May delivery if ordered in March.

Vey good, great response from the public,
Annual servicing, limited dealerships, long lead times on service at some dealerships
Paint very hard to match if damaged
Doors are fun, but you have to mind where you park (not too close to other cars, walls etc)
Some eye watering deprecation if you buy new (especially if you go mad on the options)
Easy to drive, useful boot, try and get one with lift (if you travel over speed bumps or over a steep drive)

4) What's the current lead / delivery time for a new 570s if I ordered now ?

Been told around 3 months, there is a few one year old used ones about , that are circa £20k to £40k behind list (mainly options value lost).

Cheers

I own a GT4 and recently got the chance to drive it back to back with a 570S and after not being impressed with the 540C I thought the 570s was epic. Felt much like a very, very fast flappy paddle'd version of the GT4, great steering feel, handling and superb ride. Lots of theatre with the doors, active panel, dials changing for each driving mode etc. Cons-wise I would say the brake feel in the 570s was a bit wooden vs the GT4, though it might be that I didn't get a chance to give them a proper workout. Also, for noise the Porsche wins, I couldn't hear a lot of exhaust noise in the cabin, what was mostly evident was the sound of turbos spooling up - kind of cool but not as epic as the GT4. Getting back in my GT4 I didn't feel short changed, still can't see myself not owning a 570s in the future at some point, which I didn't feel with the 540C.

I would say thats a bit optimistic.......my car is due in May, ordered in January.....although it's got MSO paint which may be causing it to take longer?

I have a GT3, and the 570s is the first car I've driven I would consider swapping it for. I think it's as much fun, and it is quicker.

However reasons I won't buy a mclaren for the minute.

Expensive servicing.
Long waits for servicing and warrentee repairs.
Limited dealer network.
My friend waited 6 weeks for a service, they don't have a courtesy car even though he was promised one, if he wants one, he has to wait another 6 weeks.
Loads and loads of small niggly problems.
When the warrente runs out, its 3.5k a year!

Maybe in a couple of years time. I hear another couple of dealerships are opening soon which might help solve some of the problems.

Dealers north of Manchester seem much better then those in the south

I looked into getting a McLaren a few months ago, but the tiny dealer network (and almost no indys) and myriad reliability problems with the cars made me back away. Gearbox, electronics, etc. all seemed to be a pain.

I have a new 570S its been back once for some minor warranty work, I live in Dorset so my nearest dealer is Rybrook Bristol, they collected the vehicle and returned it to me on a covered low loader. My 570S is a third car so I have no need of a loan car whilst its in for service, as part of the service they include picking up and dropping off for me so no hardship there. I have been quoted £480 for the first service and around £1500 for the second service which I consider quite reasonable for the class of car that it is.

Having had numerous Porsches over the years that have needed new rear main seals, PASM strut replacement, leaking water hoses, corroded air con condenser pipes and rads don't talk to me about Porsche reliability mad

Also my local OPC needs 3/4 weeks in advance to guarantee a loan car if booking in for service work, I agree that the warranty is a cost consideration but then its not a massed produced product, so you would expect it to be more expensive than the Porsche warranty.

Anyway good luck with whatever you choose they are both fantastic cars smile

I don't know if this decision is governed to any extent by money but there will be a 570S Spider at some point which will give a hit to the values of the coupe - and then an LT/Spider to put further downward pressure on.

Not to go off on a tangent but tick a few boxes and you're into used 650S Territory which is worth a good look at.

Awesome bits of kit having spent considerable time with both of them, and the early reliability issues have largely been addressed as production has gone on.

Is the consensus that an LT/LT spider will also be released for the sports series in addition to the guaranteed super series?

That would surprise me. I thought the whole philosophy of the 570s/570gt/540 was not about lap times on the track , but being able to have fun on the road. To produce a LT track focused edition of the sports series would make a mockery of that statement?

An LT 570 would make little sense......the super series already has 540/570/GT with the 570 Spider to be unveiled at Goodwood for late 2017/Early 2018 deliveries.......that will have it's own two year cycle before any lightweight/LT version came along but I just don't see it or the need for it....

isn't that the same as Porsche building a Boxster / Boxster S / Boxster GTS / Boxster Spyder (and the same for the Cayman) - entry level car with all possible iterations - little development cost and nice price uplifts on each iteration to improve profitability. Why would Mclaren not do it for the entry level model if it works for the higher priced model so nicely?

Having driven both the 570S feels a lot quicker. Both lovely cars obviously.
McLaren dealer network much improved over the last 6 months too. Unless you live in Lands End it shouldn't be a problem.

Difficulty for McLaren with any 570LT would be that for a sport Series car to do the 'LT' name justice, the price will then overlap with the new 720s. A 570LT isn't going to be any faster than the 4.0 litre 720s so who would buy it, remembering that the 675LT was the halo model for the whole of McLaren, and not just the Super Series.

The 570 spider will be next, but rather than going LT they should follow the Porsche model and produce a GT3/GT2 style 570, stripped out and more track focused but without any more power. A 570cs (club sport) which they should take racing scratchchin

Porsche didn't release a Cayman GT4 RS though did they?

no, but I thought the LT was supposed to be a more performance/track oriented car while still being comfortable (or some such wording at the time the 675 was released) .... which is a GT3/GT4 in my book

I've got my name down for the 595lt. Let's see what Mclaren actually come up with.

Even if it doesn't carry a LT badge, I think one can be very certain Mclaren will make a lighter weight, more track focused variant of the 570.

Yep, my 570S Track Pack is ordered and coming in July, can't wait to track it!

I have a 981 Boxster GTS which I also track regularly, so it's the best of both worlds really smile
