6mnth old ebay / paypal dispute

Hi all,
I sold a Thule roof mounting kit for £31 kit last September on Ebay, and the buyer has contacted me for the first time this morning requesting a refund as it turns out the box is labeled different to the items in it. The buyer has also opened a paypal dispute, now I know its only £31, but ebay only keeps records of items sold upto 60 days so I have no proof of what I wrote, what the pictures showed etc. so the buyer could be telling the truth but I've no way on checking any tells other than the price the item was sold for.
I'm happy to go along with what paypal say, but curious to know what people think as it has been such a long time, the items were sold in good faith.

Note I only sell/buy the odd item on ebay, I'm not a BIG sell or shop or anything like that.

I mean the auction is so old, ebay does not list it so I have no idea what was said, described so no proof so I cannot even check the if the items that come back or the ones sold. Daft!

Is there a time limit for a buyer to place a case?
Generally, buyers will have 30 days after actual (or latest estimated) delivery date to file a case — the same as with the current PayPal dispute resolution system. Exceptions may be made to buyers based on factors such as member account information, listing information, item location and postal method. Sellers will be asked to work things out with the buyer, if the seller and the buyer are unable to come to agreement, we won’t require reimbursement from the seller for the case.
I will just plod along with the paypal escalation !

If you escalate the case they will ask him to return it at his expense. That may put him off if it's a bulky/expensive thing to post.

This is why I will no longer sell anything on eBay. I got so fked if with people clearly on the rob/ scam.
I now use Facebook and gumtree, cost is free and is strictly cash. None of this getting robbed by eBay, then robbed by PayPal for more fees and then fked over again when the purchaser tried to scam you as well. fk that.

If you know the sale item number - the ebay api will let you pull down sale information way beyond the 30 days they show it in public...
so it is still on the ebay system - ask them to send you a copy of the sale info - or sign up for an api and grab it yourself
always worth saving an ebay sale as a pdf etc...

I would message the buyer with something along the lines of "Apologies, I'll be happy enough to go along with the outcome of any eBay/PayPal dispute if you open one."
If they keep asking you for cash directly, just refer them down the dispute route.
If they're a scammer, the chances are that they won't bother.
If eBay's disputes run for 6 months, I imagine they'd have a copy of the ad as well.
It keeps you out of the situation, means the buyer will get a refund if you've (accidentally) mis-described the item and they gets told where to go from an independent source if they're having you on.
If they keep asking you for cash directly, just refer them down the dispute route.

That's exactly what I've done now, no more messaging via ebay as the buyer was getting sarcastic and snippy, I've told him its escalated with paypal and I will honour their findings, but for now he can do whatever he likes.
interesting Ebay is 45 days and I rang them and they said commonsense should prevail but its with paypal. Paypal's is 6mnths, which for purchases from companies I guess thats fine but for 2nd hand items from individuals thats taking the **is somewhat.
