Drove a V90 for my YT channel fairly recently. I had never driven a Volvo before. IT was very nice. Only the D4 version, but you could hustle it, it was extremely comfy, plenty of room, did exactly what you'd expect.

Not cheap at around £43k but to be honest a similarly specced German car would be a lot more!

Like it or not, this is the future, it'll take time but emissions laws, ease of packaging/design and the whole "much cheapness" arguments will win the day for mainstream cars, you can't even buy a new Porsche Cayman or Boxster with more than four cylinders now, and the only hot hatches with more than four are the BMW M140i and Audi RS3, and the former manufacturer are, as previously stated, looking at four pots in some areas - it's a shame I know, and agree with you, but it's just the nature of the biz these days, smaller capacity engines with turbos bolted on seem to be the order of the day.
I don't disagree. It's stupid and a real shame, but it's certainly the case.

Really not happy about this D5 branding of a four cylinder...probably late to the party on this, but still frown

T5 is also a four pot now, sadly.

I just hope it depreciates like the V70 did so I can have one for £1500 in 8 years time.

Somehow I think not.

For a 4-pot diesel with, in this case especially, a lot of extra equipment, it looks like it hustles surprisingly well:
