Interesting situation at work. Colleague isn't into cars. It's "transport" to him which is fine. He has a 59 plate Nissan Qasqai/Cashcow diesel, low mileage of around 50k, very clean, but currently faulty. Garage have hinted at the common rail diesel injector and £600 parts and a couple of hours labour so you're looking at say £850 with Mr VAT included.

My colleagues immediate reaction is to weigh the car in as scrap and buy a new/replacement car because "it's 7 years old."

Plugging his numberplate and mileage into Autotrader gives a value of around £4k. So I'm trying to convince him that for less than a grand he could still have something worth £4k (or £3k net) but he isn't having any of it!

Can't he just trade it in if he wants a new car?

Maybe its just an excuse because he wants a new car. Leave him to it.

Tell him you'll buy it for £1200, spend the required to fix it, then polish and punt it on.

Most of the people I know just end up taking it to a dealer as PX while they chop it in for the next cashpit.

Was more fuel in the tank too than the cash I got for the car. Even left all the stereo etc in it.

I'm trying to convince an intelligent man who has no car sense. He'll be signing up to GAP/Tyre Insurance/Dent Insurance/PaintGlazeShieldbks but he'll be happy about doing so. I think when I talk car to him he glazes over as though a mathematician would explain advanced algebra to him. I've tried to be simple and even written down the calcs: a) car worth £4k, fixed for £1k, sold for 4k = £3k in pocket and b) car worth £4k, sold for £150 scrap = net loss of £3850.

His wife thinks like him too and I think the lure of a shiny new car is too great.

Said people will think its great saving 'x' on their shopping and being thrifty probably.

For me I'd drive 200miles to buy a car that saves me 1k. I mentioned this at work once and they thought I was mad. I said 'do you earn £1,000 a day'? It fell on glazed expressions.

Will he realky scrap it though or are you being over dramatic?

Surely it will go for PX or WBAC?

If he will actually ring the scrap man he deserve to lose the money as he is clearly absent of any form of common sense in the same what that my OH's brother scrapped a punto worth about £1200 as he decided it was worthless dispite 8 months MOT, having absolutely no fault orher than a slightly knocking top mount and 4 nearly new tyres..... I give up.

If he's dead set on the notion of a shiny new car, it might be time to find out what a scrap man might offer for a Qashqai. Then you can give him slightly more and either sort it for sale or punt it on eBay as a non-runner. Alarming that the guy seems prepared to lose out on the guts of £4k but it's his money to waste as he likes, I suppose.

Had a similar conversation with a mate of mine on Sunday.

He bought a 320d last year for the best part of 8k.

I have recently learned he has traded it in against a Seat Ibiza 5k I think he said he paid, they gave him 2k PX for the BMW. he said he wanted to downgrade as the BMW was costing him too much to run and insure.

I did the sums for him, for him to keep the BMW he would have a car worth approx 6k.
With him changing he has lost 4k value on the BMW plus having to pay an extra 3k ontop of the PX for the seat.

He is 7k down on keeping the BMW. When I tried to explain this as above it was met with a glazed expression, I was dumbfounded at how he could consider -7k "saving money" but its okay because it now costs him £200 less a year on insurance and tyres are £50 each less.

This is the kind of person the 0% finance deals breed.

Good old Podders. Being going for years....40 years to my knowledge . Cars piled one on top of another and take the bits off yourself. Had to get you tool box checked though!!!

Top of Bank Hill at Woodborough but the name originates from their previous site on Podder Lane about 2 miles away just off Mapperley top.

No over dramatisation. The car is now a non-runner so it can't be part-exed or WBACed

There's a few people like that in our office - the girl who has a Ford Fiesta who suffered a broken rear bumper in a non-fault rear end shunt. Rather then let the local Ford dealer repair it she took it back to the supplying dealer in Halifax, where her parents live, to have it repaired, because she was adamant the supplying dealer was the best and to maintain her warranty.

Watch my grandad go back to the same dealer every 3 years to trade is 4 year old car in for a 1 year old one. The rates he is given on part ex are pitiful, I have offered to sell the car on his behalf to get him literal thousands more but all he is interested in is trouble free motoring.

That latter reason is most likely where dealers make the most of their money in my opinion.

My BiL has recently picked up a 54 XC 90 Volvo the owner was going to scrap due to some fairly mediocre electrical faults.

Can't remember what he paid but sounds cheap and car looks okay.
