Which "classic" hot hatch would you most like to own?
Discussion
+1 for the Escort, I always liked these as a kid, although I preferred the series 2
If I had space I'd consider one as a bit of a project, before prices get too far out of control. Although as someone above said, you shouldn't meet your heros, so perhaps not a good idea.
Also a big fan of the Mk2 Golf GTi, I regularly see a mint looking example in red going the opposite direction on my morning commute.

Had two Mk1 Golf GTIs and both were amazing at the time, but would be pretty ordinary today. Mark 2 still looks good today so wouldn't mind one of those.
Must admit the Corolla GTI-16s (had two) I had in the early 90s was a pretty good hot hatch and was absolutely bullet proof.
Civic Type R would be a good choice - had two of those as well... there's a theme here.
Drove a 205 GTI and loved the drive, but not the flimsy build.
In terms of owning one today... is the Lancia Delta Integrale a hatchback?

Sunbeam Lotus.
I still regularly kick myself for selling mine back in 1982.
Had a colleague with one of those back in the mid 90s. It sounded like a tractor when he pulled into the office car park. It was turning into a money pit, so he sold it and got a 205 XS, which was way more fun (apparently), with some mumblings that he should have checked the prior ownership (something about Senna being a prior owner of the Sunbeam)I still regularly kick myself for selling mine back in 1982.
I always wanted an Astra GTE, whilst all my mates were after the Escort XR3i or RS Turbo.
One of these for me. Opel Kadett GSi 16V Superboss.
A bit of info:

the original hot hatch for me was the Sunbeam Lotus, because it was a proper rwd rally car that worked. it was also fast (under 7s to 60mph), not just for its day, and has rightly become a classic. if they are sorted right, they are a fabulous hoot, and very quick still down the lanes. i had mine 3 years and doubled my money on it, buying at the right time. i'll always have fond memories, i rate it higher than any of the more modern fwd hatches i had, ie uno turbo, 205gtis etc

First generation Alfasud Ti please (yes I know its not a hatch but I'm sure no one will mind!)
This please
a 135 hp 16v boxer in just under 1000 kg of italian car, yes please!
I had a 92 1.7 8v 33 for a few years, it was a poorly maintained dog by the time i got it, but it was loads of fun when it worked, still regret selling it TBH
I had a 1.5 Alfa 33, it was a pain in the arse. 4 trips on a breakdown lorry in a year. Threw a leg out in the end, when I elected to ignore a knocking little end (the engine was scrap at that point anyway) and limp on to the services. I still have the bent con rod that went through the cases on the A1.
I sold it for spares/repairs to my Alfa mechanic, he replaced the engine and the gearbox failed a month later.
I love Alfas but you need your breakdown insurance to be up to date.
