So there I was casually browsing through a well known auction site when I come across an auction for 10 old tax discs for (wait for it...) £1200!!!!! That's including a 20% discount!!!

So for those of you who used to shove the discs one behind the other each year in the holder, go find em quick, you could be sitting on a gold mine!...... or on the flip side perhaps this seller is just off his rocker....!

You can buy reproduction tax discs (any year, any model etc) for about a Tenner if you wanted to put an age appropriate one on your classic car.

I can see there being a (small) value in a genuine tax disc off an interesting car (supercars etc) but not a ten year old VW as per that eBay link.

I offered the lunatic £0.99, £1.00 and £2.50 for their discs but unfortunately all of my very generous offers were declined.

"£5 Note AK48 Prefix Ideal for Collectors"

Shame it doesn't explain why the "AK48" prefix is ideal for collectors, as I'm dying to know.

even the name of the shop is taking the p1ss: "Jackies Bargain Shop"

Can you get them with the current tax expiry date printed on?

I've still got the last one on my car and it really annoys one of my colleagues. He keeps threatening to steal my keys and remove it! I'd love to get one that was current.

The people offering them for thousands are just chancers. The reality is they're worth about 50 pence to a pound each, in a bundle of 10-20, a little more for rarer ones from the 50's and 60's.
Job lots of 50-100 tend to go for around 25-50p a disk.

Seriously? But why? Genuinely curious as to how an old tax disc could have any value at all.

Wonder how much my collage of old ones from my MK1 Capri is worth ?

You could buy 4 months back in the seventies.

I am not really into tattoos but did consider one like a tax disk with Nov 1970 on my back.
